It's practical, it's just not usual.
The STEN and Sterling SMGs both used it and served with distinction.

There are three things that can only be done by 21-and-over-year-olds in the US, and only one of them matter to most people:
-You can legally buy alcohol (underage drinking is fine if it is supervised, I believe. At any rate, no one cares if you drink underage, only if you buy.)
-You can legally buy handguns, and, in some states (like my own, Maryland, though I only believe there are four others, out of 50) "assault weapons" (basically scary rifles).
-You can apply for a concealed weapons permit (laws vary by state, a couple say you must be 18, and Vermont doesn't require a license to carry at all). If you have a CWP and are 18, then you must be given your pistol and ammunition, you cannot buy it yourself. It is a bit weird.
Everything else, voting, etc, can be legally done when you are 18. With the exception of driving. I know kids who drive and they are only 15. There's no set age, but you have to pass a test and such.

That's really good to know but the question for me as a foreigner is, how far do this laws apply to me? You know, I'm 18, could I buy alc because in germany it is legal, or could I at least rent firearms because I'm not citizen of the US and in my country the stuff you guys do would illegal.

I don't know how this applies to you, but I do know how it applies in reverse. If I were to go over to Germany right now, I could buy beer. Americans go over to Canada and buy alcohol all the time. I can only assume it would work the same way in reverse.
Firearms are a different deal because the BATFE (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) is a pain in the ass about foreigners. You could not buy a firearm over here, for instance, because you are not a US citizen. Renting is okay, I think.

Beer might become a problem here too, because the laws about it changed and it is now 18+ too. And of course it even wouldn't be very clever to buy a gun, I mean come every six month just for shooting and put it in a locker for the rest of the time^^. The problem is that you probably just couldn't take it home with you.

Really? I did not know that. Well, you couldn't buy a gun anyway, you have to be a US citizen.
