Description
The Linux penguin, "Tux", dressed as the members of a chess set. This is a test-drawing in preparation for sculpting a set from plasticine clay. Ideally, the opposing side would either be Linux "Tux" penguins in different colors, or an entirely different theme-- say, Windows, Hollywood actor caricatures, Mac, etc.

Is it just me, or do the pawns look REALLY like chickens? And the castle-tops strongly remind me of mortarboards. Give the penguins some specs and you get a perfect pair of Oxford dons. They've got the paunchy bellies already.
Trouble with Mac and Windows is that they haven't such a mascot as Tux. There's not much you can do with a wavy multicoloured window and an apple. Er, what do Hollywood actors have in common with Tux/Linux that they may be used as opponents?

Microsoft has iconic characters. Master Chief could obviously pass as one.

re: Trouble with Mac and Windows....
Windows:
Well, the pawns can be flags with the Windows logo, while the King is Bill Gates and the Queen is Microsoft Bob [link] (or Steve Ballmer [link] ), the knight is the annoying dolphin that assists you in Excel/Word, and the bishop is Clippy [link] , the equally annoying "assistant". The castle could be the Windows search-mode puppy [link] or a tower-case PC.
For Apple, I suppose Steve Jobs could be king. LISA could be Queen or Castle; apples could be pawns. I'm not sure what bishops or knights would be-- maybe iPods ?
re: Hollywood actors: Well, they don't have ANYTHING in common with Tux/Linux. However, I was thinking that chess players might enjoy bringing their own favorite sets of chesspieces to games-- as long as the pieces were clearly labelled and roughly the same size, I'd think that people could bring any half-chess-set that they wanted to...?

Well, if the idea is half-chess-sets that people would like, the list is almost endless. Me, I'd much like a Darwin-themed set. Darwin as King, possibly Huxley or Hooker for Queen... damn, my imagination gave out. I didn't sleep enough.
I hadn't heard of Microsoft Bob. I can see why it failed, though.
