I wanna share a trick that I just found out and which will save you for both hand and magic wand tool...

Chose the magic wand tool and then mark sample all layers.

Afterwards you press somewhere on your drawing (e.g. hair) --> go to select in the top --> down to modify on the list --> Press Exspand --> In the window it says 1px, but you change that to 2 px ---> OK.

Now the colours will go under the line, but still stay where you want them

Really excellent tutorial

WOW.....You did a jolly good job! I would never have thought that sequins and velvet would go together...Maybe the Skirt to be baby blue silk and the top to be baby purple but nice velvet you should totally make clothing designs with photoshop! Just suggeting

Very nice tutorial!

I think I might be able to offer a little help with some things though regarding lasso and such. You might also want to try working clipping masks into your workflow... they're really incredibly useful once you start getting comfortable with them, and a little less obnoxious than trying to re-use the magic wand and lasso over and over again.

Here's a tutorial I made a little while back: [link]

I'm actually surprised you work with such thin lines too, I tend to work on huge documents and rarely drop below a brush width of 10px, and that's tiny for my stuff. I can't criticize your results in the slightest, I'm just trying to think of stuff that might make things easier for you

Thanks for sharing! I love seeing other artist's process.

I always loved how you incorporated subtle gradients into your pieces, and though you did that instead of flats. And you did a great job playing around with the sequins - they look fabulous. I guess we all learn something new every day!

how are you using the straight line tool for the outer contours? i don't get it! maybe it's just the old Photoshop version i use, PS6 (haha), but the line tool in mine just makes a regular ruler-straight line, i don't get how you'd ever use it to do anything with any sort of curves like you're doing here...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

setsuna22 In reply to mooncalfe [2010-08-12 09:27:12 +0000 UTC]

I still use the straight line tool X3 Ive just gotten so good at it over the years that I have learned how to make a bunch of tiny straight lines to make a curve X3

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

mooncalfe In reply to setsuna22 [2010-08-12 15:47:55 +0000 UTC]

haha! what?!? you're insane! is this a technique you picked up from somewhere else or did you invent it? it seems really nuts, like i would have never thought i could use the line tool for something like that, or... yeah...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

setsuna22 In reply to mooncalfe [2010-08-12 20:25:40 +0000 UTC]

I picked it up myself. All of my linework, before I got my tablet which was only several months ago, was done completely with a line tool. (pretty much everything before the "Self in Technicolor" image in my gallery) Now I just use it for certain areas if I want them to look cleaner. X3 That was mostly the reason i was using the linetool before. I wanted my lines to look a lot cleaner b/c I was using a mouse and they were very wobbly O:
