4e actually has pretty decent gameplay. If it had been its own game system instead of an edition of D&D, I think people would've liked it quite a lot.

Cool and funny. *giggle

Sorry for not knowing, but what's so bad about dungeons in 4th ed?

It tried to streamline the Pen and Paper to mimic a MMO game.

To give context to that. 4th edition was created during a time when MMORPG video games were soaring and becoming very mainstream, so the creators of the new version were trying to scoop in this new audience by making it more 'introduction friendly' as 3.5 and 2e had a learning curve reputation.

To make it a little worse, the 3.5 VS Pathfinder debate was also quite active at the time hence a new edition would allow WotC (Wizards of the Coast) would be able to move out of the fandom debate and address game issues that their competitors had addressed better than they had.

Unfortunately, their attempt was received badly by the majority 3.5 players, but it did scoop in newer players for the 4e and was successful enough to push for a lot of newer books being published.

4e was designed with online play in mind, and was meant to have a virtual tabletop program released alongside it. It wasn't like a video game because they wanted to copy MMOs, it was meant to be a tabletop game for the virtual world, where people are more likely to want to play games with friends from all over the world. I myself have never played D&D face-to-face, I live in a country where calling the genre niche is an understatement, and I've yet to meet a single person IRL that has any interest in it.

Matt Colville talks about it in this video, and explains some other elements of 4e, such as why gear was essentially part of character progression, but I don't quite remember at what point he brings it all up. Either way, the entire video's great.

What a stupid idea btw.
MMORPGs are (for me personaly) the most immersion breaking kind of games. Forging a Pen and Paper after the MMORPG formula is almost suicide for a RPG, lol.
(sorry my bad english today, i hope it was understandable anyways.)

ahh, that's interesting.
I didn't know that 4e was that different to the previous editdion. I only knew that it was somehow more simplified.

Thanks for the answer!

Additionally, every single class in 4th Edition was 100% balanced with each other (i.e. A wizard and a fighter on the same level would be reasonably expected to have a similar per-target damage output and utility.).

This doesn't sound so bad at all IMHO.
But i'm the wrong person to estimate it anyways. I never liked super powerful magicans anyways, just give me a decent sword some orcs to fight and a good looking maiden to rescue and i'm fine.
