in the verse of this comic, yes, it's a possibility that they could be injured pretty badly, or even be killed. in most controlled situations, however (like normal pokemon battles), it's very uncommon. pokemon are hardy creatures and usually take normal and elemental attacks pretty well, even if they faint. but sometimes, trainers can lose control of a situation, and if pokemon begin battling in a feral manner, like they might in the wild, they could easily be killed.
