Mario, Mario, Mario. When it comes to gaming, if you've never heard Mario's name, then I have to shake my head and say that's not possible. The heroic Mushroom Kingdom Plumber has been in hundreds of games; he's as iconic as they come; with only Pokemon's Pikachu being more recognized then he is. With that said and done; when most people think of Mario; what's the image that comes to mind? An Italian Plumber from the Mushroom Kingdom; who fights evil to ensure nobody falls into danger; an image appealing and respected.

However; Mario's original backstory was less then appealing. According to Nintendo; Mario was originally a really bad pet owner; who used to make his pet Gorilla, Donkey Kong, preform in a circus for people's entertainment. Using a whip to make him juggle and degrading him whenever he messed up (See: Game and Watch Gallery). Eventually; the stress and frustration culminated with Donkey Kong rebelling against Mario's maltreatment and breaking free; kidnapping his girlfriend Pauline and fleeing the scene; only for Mario to give chase and defeat him again (Donkey Kong/Donkey Kong 94') and imprisoning him to ensure he wouldn't break free again (Donkey Kong Jr.).

With all this said and done; why is it Mario was given such a crueler, darker story back then; yet nowadays, this.... part of his character has seemingly been swept under the rug. Is it because Nintendo doesn't want Mario associated with such past behavior; or is it because times have changed, and what was acceptable then; isn't so acceptable now.
