Ogame: Battle for the death star teaserBy Timothy Bettencourt
talrugan battleship vigilance-400 hours-hyperspace transit
corporal jacob mortin felt another shake as the ship made another swift turn around some anomoly. What it was didn't matter. Planet, ship, asteroid, even a black hole, it didn't matter. The ship had been designed to fly through practically anything unscathed. Unfortunately, once they reached the target, he'd be leaving it onboard the flimsy troop transport. Most likely he wouldn't even make it to the landing sight before being shot down. But, that's what it meant to be a drop trooper. He was one of a select few that would be sent ahead of the main infantry force to secure the target. He'd spents well over 4 years training in advanced combat training and tech study for this position. From the start and throughout training, he was psyched about finally getting to help his people's war effort. Now, however, with the reality of his assignment seeping in, he was feeling a great amount of fear build up inside him, even if he wasn't letting anyone see it.Β Β He once again checked his rifle, making sure the barrel was on firmly and the ammo was secure. He'd done this at least a half dozen times, checked his main and side weapons, kept an eye on his com link, anything to ignore the fear in his heart. He couldn't help but wonder if any of his squad mates felt this anxiety earlier in their careers. They'd all been in service since the colonies were started, and they'd seen things he couldn't even dream of. Maybe once when they were new recruits, but not now. They were like stone, way beyond him. He obviously had a long-
"Hey, you okay buddy?"
Jacob quickly turned to see Sergeant Deryl smirking at him. Deryl was some 7 years older than him but he'd been a soldier for more than 10 years. He had some impressive muscles but his real skill was knowing how to work with computers and tech. He'd also seemed to have some type of respect for Mortin, which he didn't understand, since he was problably far smarter than him.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, why do you ask?"
"Well, you pretty much checked over your gear a hundred times, usually new guys do that when they're nervous."
Mortin could only sigh at that.
"Guess I got a long way to go, huh?"
"What, you think gettin scared makes you a lousy soldier?"
Mortin looked a bit confused at this, since he never saw fear in deryl. In fact, he never saw fear in any of his teammates.
"Don't look so surprised, we all get pretty scared at times. Hell, I almost pissed myself when I heard where we were being sent."
"What, you? But...you're like the best damn soldier in this army. You're not scared of anything!"
Deryl nearly fell over backwards from laughing so hard, making a few of the technicians look on curiously.
"Kid, you have any idea what I've seen?"
"Some, from the stories you've told me. But, I thought that would make you tougher"
"Maybe, but that don;t mean I don;t get shaken up."
"Yeah, but, how can I be among the best troops in the colony if I'm pissin myself every other second? I mean-"
Deryl quickly holds his hand over Jacob's mouth while smirking.
"Let me ask you this; what makes a good soldier?"
Jacob was a bit confused at this question but he thought about it and he found it was hard to answer. After a few moments he decided to just say what he remembered from basic.
"Well, they....um.....they follow orders to the letter and never go against a mission objective."
"Even if it means hurting innocent people?"
That caught Jacob off-guard. He honestly never thought something like that would come up. He had to think on that. He was trained to follow orders true, but he really didn't think he could follow them if it meant hurting civilians.
"Well, um....uh....the...uh....Wait, the officer giving the orders would always keep his soldiers best interests in mind."
"Not always. sometimes they simply order them to their deaths to accomplish an objective"
"So...then....err....."
Jacob was at a total loss, never having thought about such a heavy situation. Deryl then puts his arm around Jacob's shoulders.
"That's something you don;t learn in basic. You only learn it with hard experience."
"So....what does make a good soldier?"
"That's something that you need to learn on your own."
Jacob went to say more, but a high pitched alarm was sent off through the ship.
"That's our cue! Time to fly!"
Jabcob nodded and the two raced off towards the launch bay of the ship. after a few minutes, they reached their vessel, a small craft similar in design to a falcon. the two quickly rushed up the steps to find the rest of their team already strapped in.
"Sarge had to babysit the new guy huh?"
"Shut the hell up, Dross, Jac's alright"
Jacob faintly heard his squadmates discussion but it didn;t matter. His thoughts were totally on the objective. As the vessel unlocked from the battleship, he once again felt his fear boil up in him. This was it. He would finally get the chance to see real combat and make a name for himself. He only hoped the ship would get him their in one peice.
