Description
"Good night Mitch. Thanks again for taking on inventory alone, I know it will take all night by yourself," Stacie said as she put on her coat."It's fine. I was only going over to Kirstin's for some studying. Go and enjoy your date," Mitch replied counting the money from the old-fashioned register.
With a final wave to Stacie, Mitch walked between the rows of music books and instruments to the stock room. This wasn't the first time he had been left to do inventory alone, in fact he seemed to be the only one who did it at all. The room was a mess, boxes and bubble-wrap littered the floor and the shelves were disorganized. Mitch was disappointed, his neat and organized stock room was now a junk heap. With a sigh, he got to work.
After a few hours of counting and cleaning, Mitch pulled out his cellphone. It's already after ten, he thought, maybe I should call Kirstin and let her know why I'm late. He dialed with sure precision, a little worried about her reaction.
"Hi Kirstin," he said once she had answered. "It took me longer to do inventory than I expected."
He listened half-heartedly to Kirstin's angry lecture. It was always the same, an angry lecture about late study dates or about who he was dating. Sometimes Mitch wondered why they were still best friends.
"Look Kirstin, I'll be there in twenty minutes ok. I just have to lock up," he replied before quickly flipping his phone closed.
He sighed. He knew that she would be mad that he had hung up on her but he was too tired to care. He left the, now organized, stock room and locked up the shop.
He looked around. The street was empty except for him and a cool breeze sent chills down his spine. He started for Kirstin's apartment building, which was located on the south side of the city.
After a few blocks, Mitch ran into a friend of his mother.
"Hello Mitchel, how is school?" she asked.
"Oh hi Ms.Summers. Its ok I guess. I'm doing really well in my Creative Writing and Guitar classes. I also have been accepted in to the English Literature course at U of T," Mitch replied with a smile.
The two continued to talk and catch up for a few more minutes before parting ways. Mitch paused a few steps down the road, thinking he had heard someone walking behind him. Turning around, he saw noone and continued on his way to Kirstin's.
Mitch walked for another ten minutes and came to the door of Kirstin's building. He scanned the tenant list for Kirstin's name and pressed the button beside it.
"Bout time Mitten, get your butt up here," Kirstin's voice came over the intercom as the door unlocked.
Quickly, Mitch entered the building leaving the darkness of night and entering the warm safety of Kirstin's apartment.
