                              Chapter Seven Awakening from Death

"Fuck", Caleb said. Everything in him seemed to hurt, and he wanted to vomit, but nothing was in his stomach. Demeter pushed him lightly down.

"You know, you shouldn't do that. You're not ready. Stay here, I'm going to get the doctor." She said.

He reluctantly nodded and tried to go over all that had happened. Last thing he remembered happening, was running out of Electric Styles, both ashamed and angry. Then there seemed to be a crash.
After that, everything got fuzzy. He seemed to remember talking to someone, he couldn't recall who it was, and what, exactly was said was fragmented, But somehow, Ophelia was there.

Caleb shook his head, and that gave him a wave of nausea.

Fuck he thought I guess I am worthless.

He looked up just in time for Kayta and Sage to come through the door. He quickly averted their eyes. Truth be told, he was ashamed now. Ashamed for having dragged them back to his side when he needed them, only to ignore them when he was done. It drove him mad, but as much as he complained about them doing it to him, he knew it was because he did it to them as well. He looked out of the hospital rooms window into the city. It was beautiful, and his city or at least the city he had spent the majority of his life in.

They called it Scindo. He never caught the history of the name that often, nor did he care. He just knew what it was and what it wasn't. It was his home. It was where he went to school, how he met his friends. What it wasn't., was pretty. Oh sure, you had your cityscape, which anybody could argue was pretty. The architecture took after most modern cities, which in and of itself took after Greek and Roman styles of old. The court house looked like the entrance to a gods house. Most of the skyline was stabbed with the points of skyscrapers which, in Caleb' humble opinion, showed how much humans thought of trying to get to the heavens. That wasn't what he was talking about; the city was, although not intentionally split down the middle, segregated to some extent and it showed the area he lived in was known as 'The Den' by the residents of the side of town where the hospital was located. Caleb knew the place he was in now by the moniker 'Pleasantville'. Yes, it took its nickname from a movie about the nineteen fifties, but that was because everyone wanted to act like it was the nineteen fifties; both sides of the city never really got along. There were plenty of times where Pleasantville had tried to shut down the Den because they deemed it immoral but, for one reason or another it never worked.

Caleb had started his life as a resident of Pleasantville, with his mother, father and little sister. He felt a pang in his heart as he thought of his little sister. Funny really, that the murder had happened in Pleasantville, and yet they had arrested a man of the Den all the same. So, of course. it was never released after that, that the child was a resident of righteous side of town. Caleb always loathed the pristine city it had caused a lot of minor conflicts with his mother, in which of course she always brought up that he was supposed to be watching his sister at the time. The last time they spoke, was maybe a month ago. In which time she had called him a blasphemer for turning his back on the family. The last time he had seen his mother was at his father's funeral. That of course had been a year ago, but he could remember it like it was yesterday.

                                                               ------

Caleb entered the room full of mourners. his father's friends and family all surrounded the room. He looked at Ophelia. She was dressed in as modest a dress as she could find. It even covered her ink. His father had been everything to Caleb, even when mom had turned her back on him, his father was always there. He remembered nights that his dad seemed to be the only sane thing in his world, when Caleb had gotten into a fight at school his father said nothing but "You did what you thought you had to. The kid was obviously poking fun at your sister, and our family. I support you, son", his mother on the other hand had grounded him for a month; which he thought might've been the right thing. At the same time she did nothing but quote bible scripture at him from the Lord's mouth.

That seemed to be his mother toward him; a self absorbed Christian who blamed her family for her losses. He drifted around the room with Ophelia in tow; Ophelia was her usual shy self. During the funeral, Caleb lost it and leaned on Ophelia at which his mother shot daggers. They had left soon after because Caleb didn't want to stick around.

That night, his mother had called and left a message on the machine

"How dare your bring that whore to your dad's funeral, I told you not to. She is the devil's spawn Caleb, and no doubt you got her from that club in the den." The message continued for several minutes like that Caleb had erased the message and never called his mother again.

                                                      -------

As much as he despised his mother, for always blaming him for his sister's death; he knew she was right about Ophelia. Everyone had basically warned him; he hadn't listened, and now look where he was; in a hospital on the 'holier' side of town. Looking around the room he noticed nothing much had changed, there were the obvious medical charts on one side of the room and above his bed there was a cross he made a grab for it when Sage took it down for him. He looked at her,

"Thank you, where did Demeter get off to?" he asked right as she came in with the doctor and a couple of drink cans. The doctor came after her, he read his name plate as "Dr. Laedis", he was a strange and gaunt looking man of about forty it was obvious he had been at this for years. The doctor looked at the chart and said:

"Well you're definitely going to be with us for a couple of days, we just want to make sure that there weren't any other injuries, no concussion that sort of thing" he flipped the chart his eyes went wide at seeing his name "Mr. Brown, are you by any chance related to Adrianna Brown?"

Caleb nodded, "she is my mother, why?"

The doctor cleared his throat; "I just wouldn't expect someone of your stature to be hanging around…" he looked at Demeter who had four tattoos, "some sorts"

"Look doctor, I mean no disrespect but, you shouldn't judge a book by a cover" Caleb said, offended by the doctors assumption, Demeter had grown up on this side of town as much as Caleb had, they knew each other from grade school. The fact that someone might assume something of her is beyond him. Then again such was the life of someone who had spent his life in Scindo's pristine half. The doctor nodded and continued, "I shall inform the nurses to do regular checks as per usual, and I am sorry for having offended you." the doctor left without hesitation.

"For some reason I don't think the guys only going to be informing the nurses"
Caleb mumbled to Demeter who was closest to him by now. He looked around the room that was when Angela entered.

She hadn't changed much save for her hair which was now a red/black combination, what was it with the women around me and this color scheme" he thought before looking up slightly remembering what he had been doing before the crash. He then looked at Demeter pleadingly, he did and he didn't want to talk to Angela; on the one hand he knew he owed her and all the girls an apology, on the other…he was already in pain, why did he have to see her right this moment?

"Oh no Caleb, she ain't going anywhere, she wanted to come because you were in trouble. We didn't think you would actually make it out of unconsciousness this fast." Demeter said, always the cool head when it came to these situations, Caleb nodded in agreement and sighed. Looking at Angela, for the first time in many years, could it really get any worse?
