Chapter 2 Part 2:Maria's Illness

Shadow the hedgehog woke up in his makeshift bed near Maria's bed(Maria made him for him after she insisted on him sleeping in her room instead the cold lab) to the sound of coughing.He groaned sleepily as he began to sit up.He looked over to his best friend's bed and saw her sitting up coughing badly.But what really worried him the most was how pale she looked.
   He got up from his makeshift bed pulling the covers off of him and rushing to Maria's side.

Maria glanced at her hedgehog friend and smile faintly."I'm fine...Shadow."She answers hoarsely.But before she knows it another cough escapes from her.

Shadow flinched at the horrible sound of the cough."You don't sound fine,Maria.Maybe I should get the Professor."The  hedgehog suggested with a tone of worry in his voice.He prepared to jump off the young girl's bed.

"It's just a cough,Shadow...I'm really o--"her sentence was interrupted by yet another cough.

Shadow reached the door by the time she began coughing again,he watched her sadly.His stomach churning painfully as he sees her in pain.

The Lab

The Professor who has been working for hours with no rest in between rubs his now very tired eyes then takes a sip of his cold coffee.He sighs as it goes down his throat,
'Always cold coffee...why do I never get to enjoy a nice hot cup?'He asks himself.
He places the cup of coffee down then gets back to work,but was quickly interrupted by a familiar voice.

"Professor!" The voice called out.

The doors to his lab makes a "swishing" noise as it opens and his creation Shadow steps in.

"Shadow? I thought I told you not to come in here while I was working?"He faces his creation with frustration in his voice.

Shadow looks up to his creator then his gaze falls on the floor."I apologize,Professor."He looks back at him."But...this is important,I think Maria has caught something."He tells him.

Gerald Robotnik removes his glasses and looks at his creation."...Maria? Sick...?"He runs his gloved hand over his bald head."How...bad?"

"She's coughing really bad and she's really pale..."He answers.

"I'll check on her."He puts on his glasses once again."C'mon."He tells his creation as he walks to the door.

Medical Bay

Once Gerald and Shadow went to Maria's room,moments later Gerald with a help from G.U.N officers(G.U.N hired some G.U.N Officers to make sure nothing in the Space Colony goes out of control with people or experiments.) on the A.R.K brought her to the Medical Bay of the Space Colony.

A room that's Maria's far too familiar with...

As a child once she was first sent here she spent most of her time in the Medical Bay of the Space Colony,running tests over and over,trying to figure out a cure and how she got sick in the first place.
Over the years if anyone had a illness no one could be near her or even touch her,unless they had gloves on.

Gerald's hope is that his creation:"Project Shadow" will end this issue Maria is having.

"How is she,Professor?"Shadow asks for the 100th time since they arrived in the Medical Bay of the Colony.

He sighs."Nothing's changed,Shadow.Her fever is extremely high...nothing's changed."

Shadow sighs and looks at Maria's fragile body.

"Listen,I'm gonna run some tests on her blood cells.Watch her for me..."Gerald stands up fully with a small amount of Maria's blood he drew out.

He nods then takes a seat on the side of Maria's bed.
He pulls back a strand of hair that's covering her right eye.The side of her mouth twitches in response.

"S-Shadow?" She weakly calls his name which is barely audible.

But due to Shadow's hearing which is much more accurate than a human's hearing.His ear twitches and he looks back up to her sweaty face."Yes,Maria? I'm here."He whispers back.He places a hand onto her clammy hand.

A faint smile forms on her young yet pretty face.
She gently grasps on his hand.

Shadow caresses her hand gently with his thumb.
Shadow doesn't even notice someone has stepped into the room.

"What is that thing doing in here?!"The voice snaps in a disgusted tone.

Shadow turns his attention to the man in a G.U.N uniform in surprise.
Luckily,Gerald steps back into the room in time before he has to reply.

"His name is Shadow,officer."
'I sound like Maria now...she would be on anyone's case if someone called Shadow an "IT" or "THING"' He chuckles inwardly.

The Officer doesn't seem humored by this at all as he steps farther in the room."I don't care,Professor.Just answer my question."He says coldly.

Gerald takes a seat infront of a computer displaying Maria's heart-rate,blood pressure and so on.(All those machines that they have in hospitals,but not modern machines like we have today of course)"He wanted to be with her."Gerald responds.

"He's a experiment,Gerald."He put emphasizes on the word 'He'"He doesn't care.He doesn't have feelings."The Officer points out.

Shadow's ears goes flat against his head angrily at hearing the word"experiment".

Gerald rubs his bald spot."He's my creation...sir.I have a say in where he's allowed to be."He lifts his head and looks straight in the face of the cold officer.

The officer narrows his eyes at the older man."Do you now?"

"Yes."Gerald answers bluntly.

"Need I remind you,Professor Gerald that without G.U.N's support on 'your' creation,he--that thing wouldn't be here,now would it?"

He was very tempted to say:'Hmph.I beg to differ,Officer.Even WITHOUT your boss' damn support I would've go on with my goal on creating the Ultimate Lifeform,to help my granddaughter and all of mankind.' But instead he says with a sigh:"I guess your right."

The officer folds his arms over his chest proudly.

"But,"Gerald continues."I was the one who spent hours of each damn day to make 'your' creation!" Gerald snaps with a winning comeback.

Shadow stands up from the side of Maria's bed."...Maybe I should leave."

His creator and the G.U.N officer looks at him;forgetting entirely Shadow was even there.

The officer looks at the professor."Yes,I think you should Project:Shadow."He looks back the black hedgehog."Besides,your training will be beginning soon,am I correct?"

Shadow rolls his eyes without the officer noticing thankfully.'Heh,I forgot all about that.' Shadow thought to himself.
Shadow looks at the Professor.

Professor looks apologetically at his creation as he replies."Yes...that's right,you don't want to late for something as important as that,Shadow.Go on."He gestures toward the exit of the room.

Shadow nods alittle.
He walks toward the door and when he passes the G.U.N officer he narrows his eyes angrily at him;in response the officer actually backs away his eyes wide.

Shadow grins at this after leaving the room.
