Akumu hugged himself miserably as he trenched through the snow, the young male Sheikah trembling from the cold as his teeth chattered. Over his typical outfit he wore a thick, hooded grey fur coat with matching fur boots to try and keep himself warm, the covering only seeming to just barely keep him from freezing. A strong wind blew and felt like it went right through Akumu's body, making him halt his movements and shiver more violently.
Out of everywhere in Termina to make a delivery, why... WHY did this one have to be in Snowhead of all places?! As soon as he finished this stupid job, he was booking it and getting the heck off this Goddess forsaken mountain! The only reason he agreed in the first place was because it was either HE went or the older woman he was doing this for went in order to deliver a letter to the blacksmith. As much as he hated the cold, he was not letting an older woman endanger herself to deliver some letter.
Well, it wasn't exactly the cold that Akumu hated, it was the wind. He could deal with the cold itself, but the wind made it so much worse and got into every nook and cranny he tried to keep warmed. He even experimented one time and bundled up as much as he could so he could still walk, though he did look like a very, VERY large Goron. He was totally fine with the cold... Until the wind started. He swore he had covered himself so not even a fly could get under one layer, but that damned wind got through ALL of them. He waddled off the mountain in defeat that afternoon and spent the rest of the day in Great Bay to warm up.
Looking up to the sky, Akumu saw that the light grey color was beginning to recede to a slight blue, signaling the end of the storm... Hopefully. He slowly lowered his hood and looked around, now seeing that he was actually off the trail to get to the Blacksmith thanks to the storm making it nearly impossible to see.
"Tch, damn... Well, at least I'm not too far off." Akumu muttered to himself before noticing something small and black in the snow near a tree. Being the ever curious, but cautious one, Akumu very carefully walked towards the object as he watched it closely. Once he was only a few feet away, he stepped on a particularly hard patch of packed snow which caused a crunching sound under his foot. The little black object moved and lifted its head, revealing that it was actually a shivering kitten!
The feline looked like it was partially frozen in the snow as it let out a very weak hiss of fear, Akumu watching it quietly. He could tell it was thin and very young, only a few months old if he was correct, and it would not survive much longer in this frozen land. He knew there were two options; leave the kitten as it was and know it would perish or bring the frail creature with him and try to find it a home once in town. It didn't even take him a second to make up his mind and he stepped forwards, the kitten hissing again in fear as he slowly reached for it.
"It's alright little one. I'm not going to hurt you." Akumu said as softly and calmly as he could, hoping to soothe the kitten as he slowly reached for it. Sadly, this kitten didn't seem to fall for his charm and nipped at his fingers as it couldn't move its paws to claw him.
Quickly recoiling, Akumu looked at the kitten before looking at the sky once more after feeling another cold wind go by and saw it was getting dark again, another storm was brewing and this one looked like it would be worse than the last one. Looking at the kitten again, he steeled his resolve and quickly moved his hand to grab the kitten by the scruff, the creature's body frozen so much that it couldn't move as the kitten hissed in angry fear.
He could see every rib and the pronounced spine on the feline and knew if it didn't eat soon, it would likely die from starvation before the icy cold grip of frozen death would take the kitten's life. Bundling the kitten up in his arms, but in a manner it couldn't bite him, Akumu pulled the hood of his fur coat up and once again trodded through the snow as the wind blew behind him.
Thankfully when he arrived at the Blacksmith's workshop, the man saw his plight and offered to give Akumu some warm tea as well as allowing him to stay in the workshop to thaw and wait out the storm as thanks for making the delivery. In addition to this, he gave some warmed fish to the kitten as well so the small creature could warm up and fight off starvation. It took quite some time for the storm to begin to pass and when it has lessened from the blizzard that was occurring earlier, Akumu took what might be his only chance to get off Snowhead and thanked the Blacksmith before he left.
It was nearly dark when Akumu finally got back to Clock Town, the young man sniffling slightly from the cold as he looked down at the kitten in his arms. The feline had calmed enough that it wasn't trying to bite or claw him, but still growled nervously as it's now thawed tail slightly flicked. He softly chuckled at the amount of fight this tiny creature had, even as it laid on death's doorstep, and couldn't help but smile.
"Tough little guy, aren't you?" He said calmly as he headed to the Stock Pot Inn. He spoke with the receptionist and got approval to keep the kitten in the room for the night, since it was too late in the night to find a proper home or someone to care for the poor creature, and was thankful the cook made a quick meal for himself and the kitten in his arms. He thanked both the cook and receptionist then headed to his room and entered the area.
Only after securing the door and any other possible escape did Akumu put the kitten down as he removed his cloak and placed it on the back of the nearby chair, the feline immediately bolting under the bed as soon as it was set on the floor. He kneeled down and lifted up the comforters before softly smiling at the kitten as it stared at him with wide eyes, the large blue orbs being the only thing he could see under the darkened bed. After moving back slightly he placed the saucer of warmed milk and another plate of shredded fish on the floor near the center of the room then sat nearby to eat his own dinner. Moments later, the kitten warily slinked out from under the bed and nervously looked at Akumu before the allure of the food proved greater than its fear.
The Sheikah man smiled at the kitten as it moved out from under the bed and curled into a ball in front of the saucer and plate, beginning to eat ravenously. He slowly ate his own meal as he watched the kitten's body begin to relax while it ate, still keeping an eye on him but seeming to be used to his presence now. After a few moments, the two finished eating and Akumu slowly stood which caused the kitten to run for cover under the nearby table while the man picked up the dishes then headed out the door to place them in the kitchen sink as the cook requested.
When he returned, he saw the kitten curiously pawing at the end of his usual white cloak and softly smiled as he quietly closed the door behind him, watching this tiny and innocent life seem to come more and more out of its shell. He watched for a few moments longer before blowing out the candles and crawled into bed, the long day and hard journey through nearly knee deep snow draining him. He hardly noticed the kitten climbing up onto the bed and look at him as it curled up near his knees while he drifted off to sleep.
After a few days of looking, it was discovered that no one wanted the little black kitten he had rescued, some saying they just couldn't afford a pet while others said that black cats were bad luck and they didn't want or need any misfortune. But with each passing day, Akumu had begun to grow more fond of the kitten he had rescued and finally on the sixth day, he made up his mind that this little fur-ball would be his companion. He gently lifted up the kitten and held it up to his face, the feline much more at ease with him to the point it licked the tip of his nose.
"So little one... What should we call you?" Akumu questioned as he looked at his new little friend. The kitten mewed softly and reached for his face to paw his nose and he chuckled while lifting the creature a little higher up. Suddenly, the morning sun began to rise over the roof of a nearby building and shone directly behind the kitten and caused Akumu to blink before looking down as he held the kitten against his chest.
"... How about, Eclipse?" The kitten looked up at Akumu and mewed again while reaching his little paws up to the Sheikah's face, beginning to purr quite loudly for his size which caused the man to slightly smile as he rubbed the kitten's back. "Alright then. Eclipse it is. Come on little buddy, let's get you a collar."
With a soft smile from the man and rumbling purrs from the kitten in his arms, Akumu headed to the shops in order to find a collar for his new feline friend. It took some time, but by mid afternoon they had found a small shop that sold different types of leather armors and other items. There were no collars, but the leather worker manning the shop was more than able to do custom orders and promised to have one done in an hour or so.
Akumu took Eclipse into town while they waited and walked with the small, frail kitten in his arms as he explored a bit. After a while they wandered into North Clock Town and he sat by what looked like a slide in the northeastern corner, gently placing the kitten on the ground by him. Seeming at ease, Eclipse began to explore the nearby area and chased a few butterflies but was sure to stay near Akumu as the young man watched with a soft smile.
The young Sheikah looked up at the sky while he relaxed before closing his eyes as he listened to the sounds around him; hearing the hustle and bustle of the villagers in Clock Town Square, the birds singing and other sounds of nature, even the excited meows and purring of his new companion Eclipse as the kitten played in the nearby grass. However, it felt like something was missing…
He absentmindedly reached into the bag he had recently gotten and pulled out a dark purple ocarina, an item that his adoptive father Shoa had found near him when the man discovered him as a baby near Kakariko Village in Hyrule. Shoa was sure this ocarina must have been an heirloom from Akumu’s family and was sure to give it to the boy when he was old enough to know how precious the instrument was.
Bringing the ocarina to his lips, Akumu began to play a song that he had heard long ago, the song being one that Shoa had taught to him: The Song of the Forest Sage. Or at least what they thought it sounded like, as from what they knew, no one alive had heard it. He softly smiled as he played with his eyes closed, not noticing the forming crowd as he was caught up in the music.
After some time passed, he opened his eyes to check on Eclipse and blew out a sharp and short note of surprise noticing the crowd in front of him who suddenly began clapping once he ended the song. Blushing deeply, he quickly pulled up his hood and grabbed Eclipse, leaving the area in embarrassment.
When he arrived at the shop, he was relieved to see that the leather worker had actually finished earlier than expected, and paid the man his well earned rupees before leaving. He headed out and kneeled down then set Eclipse on the path in front of himself and fitted the kitten with his new dark red leather collar, smiling in satisfaction when it was large enough for the kitten to grow into but small enough to fit him now.
“Looks great on you, Eclipse.” Akumu said with a smile, chuckling as the kitten rubbed up against his shin before he pet the feline. He then stood and started to walk down the path, looking behind him and smiling at Eclipse. "Come on bud. Let's go."
Eclipse mewed in excitement and quickly bounced after the Sheikah man as Akumu walked, the kitten's tail high in the air as he followed his new owner on whatever adventure would come their way.

He's a grumpy man now, he's 10 years old! He's gotten a little more affectionate with age, but just a little.

That was so sweet~! I'm happy Akumu found himself a buddy, and likewise for Eclipse they sound absolutely inseparable! I loved the gradual pace of the story :> it was kind of Akumu to take care of Eclipse and try to find him a home. What a wonderful short story! <3
