Description Ok here is my first attempt at doing a pastel.
For a first try I’m pretty happy with it, but I do admit it doesn’t look that much like Evangeline Lilly. I'm just glad it looks human.
I decided to do the same pose as I did with the pencil drawing just so I could compare the two. The pastel is 16 X 18 and the pencil one was 13 X 17ish.

I’m going to have another go at pastels just as soon as I decide on a subject. All I can say is the next one definitely WON’T be Lilly!

It's funny. I recently saw a drawing of Jennifer Aniston that looked more like Evangeline Lily. This one reminds me more of Jennifer. Maybe there was some cross-mojination.
In any case, it's a really good job. I've never been good at pastels.

Haha – yeah, I missed her likeness pretty bad, but that’s what practice is for right?

Absolutely.

I've been practicing a long time, and I still come up with things that aren't even close. Like you said, I'm happy if they look like Homo Sapiens, and the gender I intended it to be.

I have to agree with you. Digital art is fine and all, but most of it looks too “erfect” to me. Plus I like turning a blank piece of paper or canvas into something. I see from your gallery that you do as well - nice work by the way.

thank you. digital is a tool. i want the life of my hand and the pulse through my hands onto the work to give it life. all else seems autonomous. finishing a piece is so hard. picasso said "a painting is never finished, it is merely abandoned". i think he had a real connection to the traditional work he was making. what do you feel when your work is "complete"?

"a painting is never finished, it is merely abandoned" – What a wonderful quote, it is exactly how I feel. For me one of the hardest things to do is stop working on a piece. More than once I have overworked a painting or drawing because it never feels finished to me. I guess I like the process and interaction with the materials too much.

we all enjoy the materials. i am constantly looking for a balance. i know it exists somewhere. what do you most enjoy as a medium?

I’m really enjoying pastels right now. I think it’s always exciting (though frustrating at times) to work with something new – and I’m definitely in the early stages with pastels. BUT I’d have to say that my favorite thing is sitting down with a pencil and plain old paper. For me that’s where the creative process starts. Some of the most personally satisfying things I’ve done are little more than doodles. I’ve never captured on canvas the spontaneity of those sketches and doodles. What about you? What’s your favorite medium?

my favorite is drawing with pen and ink. so much more focused concentration. then i take that and develop oil paintings and acrylic paintings for it as well. i am also a bladesmith. steel is such a beautiful medium. as a teacher i must do everything i guess. so i try to develop in all the media. it is a wonderful job. i usually post examples i make for my students in my gallery here. did one yesterday and posted it. my question i am trying to answer in life is "what is man and why is man?"

I just noticed your Willow Leaf Dagger in your gallery. How did I miss that? I like how the blade flows out from the handle. Will you be posting more works like this? I hope so.

I typed in the word - "perfect" up there. Don't know why I got all those symbols.

You should be very happy with this painting. I really like your use of strong colors and the hair looks very good. I have done more pastel than anything else and am trying my hand at acrylic and oil. Check out my stuff please and you can see the different effects that you can have with pastel and yet have them look well done. I will be watching for more pastels from you. I like your style
