Description
Back to pastels…This little dog was a commission. I was able to finish the piece in about two hours. Wish I could say that means I’m getting faster, but I think it means that dogs are just easier. Anyway, I’ve lost count but I think this is my 7th or 8th pastel. Oh well, here it is.

so cute! reminds me of my dog. She looks just like that, though her head is all brown.

I think pastels are like a grownup version of finger-painting - only messier I keep a damp towel right next to where I'm working for the sole purpose of cleaning my fingers after every swipe and yet I'm STILL covered in colorful fingerprints when I'm done. In fact, after a painting my whole office looks like it's been dusted for fingerprints - not by cops, but by clowns!
We raise Jack Russells (currently have FIVE of them) and a year ago we had two litters - 12 puppies in all. Two of the puppies looked EXACTLY alike except one was a boy and one a girl. My nephew kept the girl and some friends took the boy. This is a portrait of the boy, but I swear I could give it to my nephew and he would think it was his dog. I've never seen two dogs look so much alike. I have a feeling when my nephew sees this I'll be doing this portrait again.
I would LOVE to paint your cat! You should post a photo!!

ah! I love dogs too, but work too much to be able to look after them properly, my Neko is a lovely independant affectionate, bossy, cute little cat and I fuss over him way too much, he is really spolied
I'll post a photo of him when I have a really good one
Andy said that drawing fur and animals in general is really hard, and I agree! You have done great with your little dog
lovely expression!

That's wonderful. I love the colours. Its almost enough to make me want to try pastels.
Nope. No it isn't. I'll leave it to the masters

Thanks - don't kid yourself, you would do well in this medium. BUT, you have to follow your muse. [And I must say yours is being particularly nice to you ]

LOL. Its true
This community reveals so much to inspire, and so much to try out. When the fates are being kind I can't wait to take it all on.
On other days everything apart from an HB pencil looks a little scary

I hear you. There is so much talent here! It makes you want to work twice as hard and at times it makes you want to throw all your supplies away and take up fishing.
I guess the only reason I stay at it is the fear that talent is probably needed for fishing too.

LOL! At least brightly coloured pastels might work as bait. Ever tried attracting a fish by waving a piece of charcoal at it?

Eeek! its so adorable! i thought it was done with paints at first, painting on weird surfaces like that makes it look sort of pastely sometimes...
great work though, i lack any skills with pastels, though i have been know to be able to draw a dog or two
this turned out really well though! i love it when art is done on just about anything other than paper or canvas... haha

Thanks
Wow – you do dogs REALLY well!
Yeah, I chose the brown paper mainly because the dog is white. The paper has a great tooth though so it worked pretty well. I think you should give pastels another try.
