Description When I reached my 500th hit, both Pikatekat and the-anime-dude got screencaps of same - but Michael forgot to tell me immediatey... so I only got the reference picture for his request a week or so back, and only got round to drawing her last night - she's a Japanese singer, I think? Done in karisma pencils, took about 4 to 5 hours I think. You do not want to know how many layers of colour it took to do that skin... suffice to say, it was well over 30 or 40.
I'm pretty chuffed with this - it's a hard picture to draw because of the angle, and I hate doing straight on noses - but this one came out well for me.
Edit: Just noticed that the eyes look slightly off, the screen left one is a little larger than it should be - however, it doesn't look so bad in full view. Nor for that matter does it look so bad in real life... darn scanner!
2nd Edit! Michael has just told me that her name is Utada Hikaru - and I wanted to make a note of that here for anyone interested...

Hey Shedara.
I'm really enjoying this one.

I actually think the slightly large eye is brilliant!

Gives it that slightly skewed impression and draws the viewer in more, becuase of the ever so slight uneasiness it causes.

The lips are also very sensual, as if you could almost feel them.

Really, really strong piece.

Thank you! I was looking at this just the other day actually, and remembering drawing it. I'm still not happy about the nose though. It's somethin I must get back into doing, especially as now I have a much wider range of colours.
Yes, I get what you mean about the uneasiness - I don't think I'd have been able to see it just after finishing the piece, because it would have been too close in my mind - but now...
And the lips were always my favourite bit of this piece...
Thanks for your thoughts and for the

Gotta love the expression and those huge eyes... I think you've managed a very difficult thing here - to show big eyes, round with surprise or wonder, without losing their Asian shapes. And the bigger one isn't that striking, you notice it only after a while, even when you're looking at the smaller view.
Yeah, the nose would need a little bit of reworking - the part between the eyes, on the level with them, is a little too thin, and the middle of the nose on the screen left is a little too wide. The rest of the nose is just fine.
I like the shading a lot, the boldness of colouring on the face, as I'm myself am always very shy when colouring faces. Your combination of hues works very well here. All in all, I like this pic a lot.

Thank you for putting so much thought into that comment! I very much appreciate it! For interests sake, that is the first time I have drawn an Asian face.. everything about the picture was completely new for me. Thanks too, for the reassurance on the eyes - I get paranoid...
The nose was weird to do - apart from the angle, something went rather strange with the pencils (I am not blaming my tools!! ) and it became very hard to shade in the direction I wanted to... But yes, I agree with what you've pointed out...
Have you tried Karisma/Prismacolor pencils? Because I'm not normally so outsgoing when i shade skin tones either, I honestly blame the pencils for this sudden diversion from my normal hues... (not that it's a negative blame though!)
Thanks again, so much!

Well, I hardly ever draw with coloured pencils at all; if I do coloured works, it's usually watercolours. And if I do use coloured pencils, I don't actually have a very impressive set of tools - it's only six pencils in six colours... by Koh-i-Noor... Never even seen Karismas or Prismas

Shedara In reply to manuelka [2004-04-11 21:20:56 +0000 UTC]

Really? Far be it from me to say, but keep an eye out for them - I've used a mix of cheap and expensive colouring pencils for years, from cheapo 10pence ones to derwent and conte, and to be honest, none of them have a patch on Karismas (they're the british/european from of prismacolors, I believe.)
But the name Koh-i-noor means nothing to me, I'm afraid.

manuelka In reply to Shedara [2004-04-11 21:29:44 +0000 UTC]

I will keep an eye out for them, thanx Koh-i-noor is a mark of Czech pencils - their regular ones are great, and the coloured are kinda greasy, which enables one to put a lot of layers on relatively thin papers without destroying the sheet.

Shedara In reply to manuelka [2004-04-11 21:49:30 +0000 UTC]

ahhh, that sounds vaguely like karisma - although I don't feel tat they're ata ll greasy compared to, say, derwent.
Anyways...

I knew it was Utada Hikaru right away, my older brother has the CD with that pic. Good job! Utada Hikaru is sort of like the Japanese Britney Spears, or so people say. Anyway I like her music I think she uses clips from a rolling stones song in one of her songs

Shedara In reply to ArtLair [2004-04-10 16:24:23 +0000 UTC]

Eeeek! (I'm *not* a fan of Britney or her ilk of music... Much more a rock/alternative person.) Although the idea of a clip of the stones is interesting... Was it you I told the Paul Simon/My Gran story to? The same club that she ran, the stones used to come to it before they were world renowned... she said "they were very nice boys..." Gotta love my gran
Thanks!

No worries, she isn't like britney spears. (i rly, rly, don't like briney spears music) She's popular that way - but still not THAT poular, getting there though. I would say she is more, I don't know -her music is kind of R and B - she has her own unique style though, you'd have to hear it, hehe.

LOL!!!
I'm not an RnB person either - celtic, folk, grrl music, alternatice rock, hard rock...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Anime-Dude In reply to Shedara [2004-05-12 09:13:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! No worries - I am mostly into rock, some metal, jazz some celtic - I like stuff like U2, evanecence, pink floyd, paul gilbert, racer x, enya and various other stuff.

Theres a really good Japnese Artists called Keiko Matsui who is just awesome! You'd probably like her stuff - her cd's are a bit more than norm, 'cause they gotta be importaed - but their worth it! (it's classed as Jazz, but it's a cross between modern jazz, classical and some traditional Japnese - celtic like )

It's only Japanese RnB I like - just 'cause it's Japanese.

I didn't register as a business. Found registration simple enough, just since then haven't really had time to actually set things up...
I get you on being busy - likewise, exams nearing. The thing with ebay, is don't you ahev to pay for every thing you put up? I don't really want to do that. You told me bout the bike thing before...

Sounds like we have quite familiar tastes in music then...

*LOL* I like Britney, but I also like rock... hip hop... rap... classical, oldies, JPop etc. I think that's one of the reasons I get a lot of range in my art styles - I have a lot of range in my tastes

Currently I'm enjoying JC Chasez's new CD.. and "Long Road" by Nickelback.

Yup it was me your told the Paul Simon story to

Not really into hip hop or rap (c'ept for the odd bit of Eminem...) but I get you on the big range in music creating awide range in art...
Nickleback are good... Don't think I really know JC Chasez...sounds like a rap artist though?

I like Eminem (so does my mom! Yep my family is WEIRD!).

JC Chasez used to be in N'Sync, but went Solo... his CD is a mix of Dance, Rock and... well... a bunch of other stuff. I actually really like it... though it's rather... *ahem* let's just say... N'Syncs stuff was pretty G or PG rated... A lot of this stuff is R rated (the song 100 Ways is about EXACTLY what it sounds like it's about! *hides*). The CD has an intresting feel to it!

It's cool, you seem kind of Anti-Pop/dance So I won't play any of my 80's dance party CDs if we ever meet Me, I like ALL kinds of music etc. I actually draw really well to Hanson's CD... not the pop stuff, but the Rock type one they did... really good stuff!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shedara In reply to ArtLair [2004-04-10 23:06:28 +0000 UTC]

I'm not *that* anti pop or dance, especially compared to the girls I live with, but I am rather anti Cheese... Equally, I had an obsession with SClub 7's "Reach for the stars" and a couple of Steps songs... and I went through my spice girls and boyzone stage... But I'm more of an alternative pop person by now - like on the various Buffy albums - none of the artists are mega millionaires! (or they didn't make it big until Joss discovered them). I love Michelle Branch and Amy Studt... (and I would really call Michelle rock, although Amy is going for it.) I hasten to add, I abhore Avril Lavigne... she can't sing!!! Great lyrics, but she can't sing!
*random rant oover*
Ohh. and if you don't play 80s music, can I play the Nolans?

Nice! Have a look around for some ither companies too - if I remember rightly DevArt take a high percentage - though, they give you great advertising - if you can find other people willing to sell your work, then go for it!

Thank you again, for doing the piece - no problem too, lol. Good luck with the selling!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shedara In reply to The-Anime-Dude [2004-04-16 21:44:21 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, I did. I have actually signed up now though - devart take 50% over the base price, which is pretty high, yes, but it could be a lot worse, and I wanted to give a little more back, because I love this site. There are other reasons, of course.
As for elsewhere, I might start on Ebay at some point - I'm debating doing that when I have a little more time. I didn't find anwywhere else that I would fit in and that would have me for a decent price...
Ta muchly!

appologies, I must have missd this msg. That makes sense I suppose, and you do get nice advertising from 'em.

My uncle phoned the other day,a nd started asking me to go down and start an e-bay business with him, cool suggestion, bt he lives near manchester, and I kinda like Scotland.

E-bay is very popular though, and it's easy to sell stuff from there - it would be a good move probs. You could even try cafe press and see if you can get decent prices from them - I know a few people that seel form there.

No problem, and thanks again!

Shedara In reply to The-Anime-Dude [2004-05-02 00:26:24 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, I periodically consider ebay. Am getting a cafe press shop - will let you know as and when. Also reckoning on when I make prints of my local work, buying prints and selling them from the local gallery...

The-Anime-Dude In reply to Shedara [2004-05-12 08:45:08 +0000 UTC]

I can't remember if I replied to this - sorry - so I'll reply again just in case. Sorry again for not being on much - things are pretty rushed at the moment.

I think I am going to get a cafe press shop soon - you'll have to let me know how you get on - some of the terms and conditions and how it is set up seem a bit strange to me. It makes sense, just wondered how you set it up - whether you have to kind of register a business or not, and what happens if when sales tax needs to be incurred - unless all that is cancelled out because it's an American company. Anyway... it was brother that started asking me that - so just moan at him, lol.

Ebay is always goo d- there will always be someone there who'll love your pics - stick reserve on your paintings - for like, minimum selling price, and you'll b sorted - just the let the bids go! Could make quite a bit that way - I was thinking about setting up an e-bay business at somepoint maybe - my Uncle wanted to start selling bikes on e-bay, should be pretty cool. He asked me to set up with him, but He lives near Manchester, and I kinda like Scotland, so I am not su re what to do. Thats for the future anyway I suppose.

And you can't bat local galleries. I hope your successful anyway, let me know once you get it all up and running. Speak to you soon. Sorry again.
