Hope you find this helpful! Oh, and my apologies for the ginormous size and fugly quality ^^'. I did it up in openoffice, the converted it to a pdf, then to a png from the pdf. Yikes!

Oh, and also- I'm sure there are plenty of fangirls and fanboys out there who will disagree with my classification of their favorite character. Of course, no character is ever 100% consistent, and opinions will vary, so please don't flame me ranting about how House is dominant-realistic not dominant-hedonistic, etc.

This is very well written, would you mind if we referred people to this? There is always something in need of this when roleplaying.

Extremely useful!

One question, though: Why is Hedwig pictured under submissive-hedonistic? D:

The sugar daddy montage? No, mostly because she's a bit debauched, but was willing to give up pretty much anything to be with her husband at the beginning.

This is absolutely brilliant. I have a history in character design and development, and these are essentially all the basic principals I was taught, combined, of course, with the other two parts.

Because I have a history in character development, people often inquire as to how to create a compelling, realistic (if the situation calls for it), exciting, visually appealing(and fitting for the personality) character, and I've often stumbled over my words trying to describe the process, as well as the psychology, pathology and personality that needs to be applied. I'm going to link them here, from now on. Great work! You mention just about everything that is necessary, in a way that is both understandable and useful for both amateurs and advanced writers and artists alike.

The third guy in dominant-realistic is Johnny the Homicidal Maniac from the comic by Jhonen Vasquez. Jhonen later went on to create Invader Zim

Personally, I woould categorize Dr. House as Dominant Realistic, but all the same this is many light-years beyond brilliant, and I shalt definitely be using it for reference.

I did, as a matter of fact, come across the second problem, but already I can see several possibilities while still going off of my own personality.

Sheeply In reply to someguynobodyknows [2009-10-24 17:39:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, I did mention that people tend to shift modes in different situations - being able to do so is an important coping strategy. For Dr. House, whether you consider him dominant hedonistic or realistic depends on why you think he tortures Cuddy and his team - because he enjoys it, or because he's experimenting to find out how they'll react? I tend to favor House's childish and impulsive side, but realistic fits him equally well, especially when he goes into tennis ball tossing mode ^^

I re-read them when I make my own characters XD. Sometimes it helps to have a process to flesh things out and acid test your ideas. It also helps to get the ball rolling on new characters ^^.

This is like a huge smack-in-the-face for me. I've had so many story ideas that lack characters who can play their role, and characters whom I think are well-developed but there's something wrong that I couldn't figure out. Thanks for the wake-up call. I'm checking out part two...

I don't comment here much but I have to say that this is by FAR the best character tutorial I have ever read... No joke.

I love reading about writing and character creation because I love learning about personalities, psychology, writing out a good plots and just got an incredible thirst to learn new things and concepts! This definitely fed me that and more. This showed me the basics and beyond in a way that will surely effect my writing for the better and gave me a new way to think about my characters and myself! It’s funny because I saw myself in a few of the archetypes and it was quite fun and informative!

I think that the best part is not just the information but the way you presented it in an easy way. Any one can pick this up quickly and the character examples were right on! To think you wrote this in eight hours you’re truly amazing! I’ve written little tutorials even a personality one and it takes time patience. I’m glad I’ve found this tutorial and this deserves to be in every artist’s favorites!

Oh yeah, I’m dying to see the second part. I know that I won’t be disappointed! :3
