Description In the original adaption of Speed Racer, Rex Racer, Speed's older brother, was the fastest driver on the race track until he had a falling out with Pops after wrecking the Mach One (the first car Pops ever built) and ran away. During his exile, Rex assumed the mysterious Racer X (a.k.a. Masked Racer) identity, to pursue his racing career, driving the number 9 car, the Shooting Star.

In the 2008 film adaptation, The relationship between Rex and young Speed is built considerably with Speed looking up to Rex as a role model and learning how to drive from him. Rex drives both the Mach 4 and 5 in the film and gives it to Speed when he leaves Pops' racing team to drive for corporate interests. As the film closes the truth about Rex and his work before his "death" is revealed and he is shown faking his death in the caves, detonating his car and undergoing cosmetic surgery afterwards to alter his appearance in order to take on the corruption without bringing harm to his family.

In the series Speed Racer X, Rex did not run away, but is presumed dead after an accident while testing out the Mach 5. Pops later rebuilds the Mach 5 with a new safety system called "Safety Seven", which protects its driver. Speed decided to follow up in his brother's footsteps.

And so I combined all the origins of Rex becoming Racer X. Rather then running away or creating an accident, or believed to be dead while testing the Mach 5, Rex was still the best racer there was and had a good relationship with his family. Rex once drove the Mach 4 and won merely every race until he crashed at a cross country race, believed to have vaporized in a pyrotechnic explosion. However, Rex survived the crash though was severely injured but didn't revel himself to the outside. After 4 years of full recovery, Rex assumed the mysterious Racer X identity, to resume his racing career, driving the Shooting Star 9.
