Description
Hanabi (fireworks) Festival in Kurume city Fukuoka prefecture

(I was back. I enjoyed summer holidays. )

If you travel Japan -probably the same as almost areas in the temperature zones on the world-, spring and autumn are the best seasons for enjoying a pleasant trip because of the calm weather. Summer is not suitable for a comfortable trip. Summer of Japan can compare to "in a food steamer". So humid, sweaty, sticky and stuffy.

But there are a lot of enjoyable events which are special in summer. A lot of summer festivals are held from July to August in Japan. (June is a rainy season in Japan.) Tanabata festivals in various places, Gion Festival in Kyoto, and a lot of famous festivals. Hanabi(=fireworks) festivals in various places are ones of them.

Needless to say, festivals on the worlds generally use fireworks in their production. Independence Day, New Year Day, and some festival days. Fireworks in festivals are not rare. But the "festival" is a main player. Fireworks are supporting players of the festival. People share impression of the festival day by fireworks' beautiful productions.

Hanabi festivals in Japan is an unique culture. Fireworks are main players in the "hanabi festivals". Japanese call fireworks "hanabi"(花火). Hanabi means "flower's fire" (花=hana=flower, 火=hi→bi=fire) in Japanese language. People gather in hanabi festivals for watching "fire flowers" on the night sky.

In 15~16C, fireworks were brought to Japan by Chinese or Portuguese. When it becomes Edo period (17~19C), it was established that people enjoy hanabi festivals in summer. Hanabi craftsmen have vied their skills by forms, colours and arts of hanabi on summer festivals for a long time.

I think European made much account of production of fireworks, and Japanese made much account of arts of hanabi.

There are "shakudama" in the type of hanabi. The biggest shakudama are big spheres which diameter are about 120cm. It raises to a hight of 800m and blooms a fire flower with a diameter of 800m on the sky. When shakudama explodes, a big impluse wave vibrates ground, people's bodies and hearts vigorously.

Hanabi festivals are mainly opened in weekend of July and August. But some festivals are opened in weekdays. I don't know how many hanabi festivals in Japan, but there are several hundred festivals per one summer in Japan.

If you visit Japan in summer, please enjoy a hanabi festival.

I watched Chikugogawa Hanabi Festival in Kurume Fukuoka in this summer. It's one of the famous hanabi festivals. ^^

absolutely amazing!!! Japanese hanabi are sooo fantastic!!! You captured it perfectly!

I heard that the first recorded fireworks display was held by shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1613.

( Personally I remember especially hanabi taikai in Uji and Kyoto - it was absolutely brilliant, really unforgettable!!! Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to watch famous Sumida-gawa fireworks in Tokyo... )

Thank you so much!

Brilliant! You know Japanese history and tradition very well. You're quite right. ^^

If you visit Japan in from the last half of July to the first half of August, I reccomend you a hanabi festival (and matcha gelato which I said before). But that season is so humid, sweaty and stuffy. In addition to it, there are a lot of people, people and people in a hanabi festival (especially Sumida-gawa festival gets crowded terribly). Be careful not to get a heatstroke.

You are most welcome, dear friend!

Thank you for the nice words... I love Japanese traditions
... and thank you for the recommendation.
I know Japanese summer already very well   ... but summer in Europe now seems to be even worse  !!!

Oh, dear. Take care of yourself.
Extreme weather is a world problem.
I heard it was over 40C in Paris this June, though it had been rainy everyday in Scandinavia.
Japanese summer is abnormal too. It was hotter than general summers in western Japan. The day of the hanabi festival which I went was one of the hottest days.
But, on the other hand, it had been leaden and rainy summer in Kanto and Tohoku area (Eastern Japan). Rain, rain and rain. Japanese August is generally sunny (and the hottest) season. But it had been not hot, and people hardly saw the sun this August. Everyone thought where was summer.

The US state of South Carolina feels like a food steamer in summer too.  Typical daytime highs in the 90s (Fahrenheit) / 30s (Celsius) with humidity between 70 to 90 percent.  I think it's climate classification is something like "humid subtropical." The good news?  Air conditioning is virtually everywhere and essentially every home and apartment has this.

Probably the biggest summer celebrations are Memorial Day (in May, which sort of kicks off the summer season), Independence Day (July 4, a very patriotic holiday), and Labor Day (in September, which sort of marks the end of the summer season).  It would interesting to visit Japan during one of their summer events.  That fireworks display looks amazing.

On another note, snow is rare in the Southeastern United States except for the higher elevations.  Typically if the lower elevations get anything, we just get ice or rain.  In other words, we typically don't see this in the American South:  www.japan-iwate.info/cgi_data/…

I think summer in South Carolina is similar to Japanese summer. ^^
There are two kinds of summer on the world.
One is a frying pan (for example Arizona), another is a food steamer.

Snow is comparatively rare in Tokyo too. It only sometimes piles 20~30cm.
Japanese winter is not so cold except Hokkaido (northern Japan).
But Tohoku area and coast of the Japan Sea is one of the heaviest snow area on the world.
www.google.co.jp/search?q=%E6%… :
Snow piles 3~4m in villages of some mountanious areas. In old days, people who lived in such heavy snow area had gone in & out their house from the window of 2 floor in winter.
And Mt.Tateyama is very famous as big snow wall. It's about 10m.
