Description The Barrett M82 .50 Calibre Sniper Rifle. Made in maya with improvements over previous submissions. The scope lens was changed, the grip was modified, bipod was changed, among other things.

Some slight photoshoping. 4 minute 43 second render time with mental ray.

EDIT (27/07/09): First time trying out Ambient Occulsion. Much more photoshopping, changes to lighting, added much more shadow rays to kill the stupid noise, stuff moved around, other minor tweaks with GI, Caustics and FG.

New render time: 13 minutes 7 seconds...

It is not actually a sniper rifle, using it as such would break the Geneva convention, it is for anti-vehicular usage, because the military's goal isn't to kill, but to render harmless

depleted uranium bullets! they glow in the dark!

lol, i know its just mental ray. the final gather and AO always annoyed me on on stuff with any reflection or refraction. it was always an extra step to tweek the reflection

This is one of my favorite rifles, and it certainly looks the part!
Model is spot on, texturing is pretty good, but the lighting and rendering seem a bit... off. Firstly, the Global Illumination photons thrown off by the cartridges are far too bright, making it seem as if the cartridges are glowing, rather than reflecting. The materials on them aren't really accurate either, as they'd have to be far glossier in order to throw that much light around. While we're on the topic of lighting, the scene also feels under-exposed; too dark. So, ambient lighting may need to be jacked up.
Lastly... Aren't the .50 cal rounds larger than that? I know those rounds are large, but I get the feeling that the actual .50 cal rounds are even larger. I could be wrong, of course.
So... In summary: Great model, but take a second look at texturing and lighting.

I spent a while on the model and tried to keep it to scale as much as i could. the gun is completely untextured though, i only made some materials for them.
the caustics (glow around bullets) was actually quite faint at the time of the render. and i just jacked up the saturation and vibrance in photoshop to get a glowy effect. which i now admit, is way overdone. you may be right about the 'glossieness' of the bullets. thats something i didn't really look at. but their size is scaled quite accurately. as for the underexposure, that may have been to overdone ambient occlusion, which i didn't know much about back when i made this rifle.
you pointed out all the mistakes, and you're right about all of em. and since a while ago, i've been redoing this entire rifle from scratch so that i can improve on everything. you can see my latest WIP in my gallery. i just haven't gotten time recently to work on it =[

the poly count is real bad D: just over 90K ._.
i was real crap at modelling at when i made this barrett. so i'm actually redo-ing it to improve as much as i can 8D you can see the latest WIP in my gallery

ooh nice. so your using maya not bad for a start. but just a suggestion avoid modelling with so many bevels (which is what i think your using?). i used them for my barrett and it really jacks up the polycount.

Thanks and no there is no bevels in it ^^ Sometime i simply press num#3 (smooth) and ajust some edge with the crease tool.
