Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

Lols. Love it. I refuse to draw pointy chins on anyone but my main char.
All bets are off when I draw my shitty fan art though

I didn't even know there was a difference between a "jaw" or "jowl".
Looks like you taught me something.
Thanks a lot for making this!

It's.... part of the face. Sort of the cheek/lower jaw region.

The comment about the "Ugly Shovel" made me laugh so hard because of how true it is.
Now, none of those rules are different from what you can read in a "how to make Western Cartoons" tutorial book... Well, the main difference is that you stick more with Nature's design of the human figure in the process of developing a character or facial expression.

shingworks In reply to White-over-blue [2009-01-18 22:28:32 +0000 UTC]
Haha XD Yeah, I've never read a real tutorial book so I dunno... but I know these are pretty basic rules, and expect that they'd be in a general drawing book. Its good that I'm sort of doing things the right way, then?

White-over-blue In reply to shingworks [2009-01-18 23:01:16 +0000 UTC]
Doing things the right way? To do things "right," you must know how the human body works, so yeah... you're doing pretty damn well
What I'm saying is that there isn't much of a difference between your technique and, let's say... Milt Kahl's technique (Disney's best traditional animator of all time). The big difference is that you keep the authentic proportions in your characters, and he is likely to destroy those rules of thumbs (but intentionally). get it?

Oh yeah, I know what you mean... I think the vital point is to know the rules you're breaking before you go and break them XD

Man, if this gets even one person to drop a blank animu style for well-constructed, expressive faces, your work here is done.
(It's so much FUN to draw people with crazy idiosyncratic features! Why did no one tell me this before??)

HAHAHAHHA XD SHOVEL. That's just amazing.
Your tutorials get better everytime. I was JUST on the train today thinking: why does this face look more like an ass than a face? (luckily this wasn't one of the ones I used myself as a reference for) and thought: I NEED TO LOOK AT A REFERENCE.
SO, thankyou ><
one question: I know theres roughly one eye between the eyes, but how do you measure how wide the ACTUAL nose should be??? I mean, I ALWAYS get this wrong XD
š: 0 ā©: 1
shingworks In reply to jezebel-polizia [2009-01-18 22:33:53 +0000 UTC]
Well, the nose is generally as wide as what looks good to you! Look at your own face for reference... since people's noses totally vary in width, it is really just a matter of picking the right look and sticking with it

Geometry is =very much= a good tool in faces (I agree), if you just draw two self-portraits (which are good to do because you're always at your disposal) one just running with it and the other thinking with more Geometric shapes, the more geometric one tends to look better.
<3 Very helpful tutorial! <3 Thanks for making these!

Hahaha, 'spheres sunk into your face'. I know what MY next chat up line will be!
But this is very very useful <3 I like the tip about removing the irises to check if the pupils are focused; I always have so much trouble with that. And getting craniums the right size, ugh. In fact this tut is crammed with good tips I need to remember!
(And lolz, I figured you had linked me again when I had a comparatively massive influx of faves. You're such a nice pimp <3)

shingworks In reply to mimm [2009-01-18 21:56:31 +0000 UTC]
Thanks The pupils thing helps me a lot too, I tend to make my eyes all crazy if I don't draw with a good sketch first. Actually when eyes look unfocused I think its more because the eyes themselves are off kilter, not the pupils... arg, oh well.
Haha, I guess I am a pretty nice pimp (don't tell anyone though they'll think I'm going soft)

Oh lulz anime side-of-face-mouth-syndrome has always annoyed the crap out of me. And noses are amazing and need more love.
Ahaha this reminds me, I just spent the last couple days trying to memorize facial shapes for a few of my characters that have been julting around. Everything you do is so simple and clean though, I just make a mess out of it )8<

shingworks In reply to Cedarwolf22 [2009-01-18 21:57:29 +0000 UTC]
XB Yeah it is hard keeping face shapes straight. I mess up Angora's every other drawing, cuz I don't have like a ref sheet + she is super generic looking... I should write a tutorial on how to not be stupid and then give it to myself 3:

I know I associate certain face shapes with a lot of my characters. But I fail horribly at drawing them the same way twice.
just needs practice, like anything.

OMG YAY
AN ALEXDS1 TUTORIAL!
My day is complete.
As always, I love that you go over non-traditional character types (ie noses, face types). I really liked that bit about the triangle - as much of a tutorial-addict as I am, I don't recall reading that anywhere before
Thanks again for your wonderful tutes!

it was worth the lul'z. If only you had this out a week earlier, we had to do self portraits for my object perspective class! I actually surprised myself on that assignment, it didn't look like crap! but i don't think it looked like me.... I'll have to post it if i can get a copy back from my teachers.
As always your tutorials are fantastic and fun, and yes anime is very shitty, almost all my classmates draw like that, very few of use use realism, or western styles. It's quiet annoying! keep up the kickass work alexds!
