Oh damn, oh shit

Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).

I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

*edit* Oop, almost forgot! my fav nose tutorial, by mimm :mimm.deviantart.com/art/Nose-d…

Thanks so much! And I think my style is sort of a mix of anime and western, but thats ok. The best anime employs the same kind of rules, sadly too many people just draw the most boring thing they can find cuz they see it everywhere XC

the same could be said about avatar, one of the western styles first attempts at an "anime" type show. it's a good mix haha

Rather than scanning something into Photoshop to check for crookedness, I just flip the paper and hold it up to the light. It's like the ghetto "flip horizontal". XD

shingworks In reply to WhipsmartMcCoy [2009-01-18 21:22:25 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yes I used to do that, or if the paper was too thick, go to the mirror. I am lame and can't do anything without the comp now XB

Mmmmm... lips!
Awesome as usual. But.. what are these things you call... lower eye-lids? I am so confused!

Also, have you seen this: [link] ? pretty cool!

shingworks In reply to ming85 [2009-01-18 22:00:12 +0000 UTC]

haha, lower eyelids XD Like when you squint or something. My mom told me that when my lower left eyelid twitches it means I'm going to be angry (according to chinese medicine or something) XD

And thanks for the link, those are pretty nice :3

I LOVE (big emphasis on the love) your tutorials. You could do a tutorial on how to effectively draw someone retching and I think I'd still adore it.

Thanks!

AGAIN, I LOVE YOU.

However I beg to differ on one important issue! Some of us DO stare forwards all day, slowly transforming into amorphous blobs with horribly overdeveloped "F5" muscles.

...not me, obviously, but if I had my way, I would.

shingworks In reply to Kittyjimjams [2009-01-18 22:35:10 +0000 UTC]

hahaha, f5 muscles... sigh. Well I think my scroll wheel muscles are almost as well developed.

Excellent tutorial! It was really helpful adding which way the lines go with perspective-!

I've always loved how simple your faces are (and by simple, I mean you use very few lines) yet still complex enough to give each character their own personality and look.

Bwahahaha precious anime.

Everytime I think "hey, I can think of a subject `alexds1 hasn't tackled yet" you do the tutorial on it :< But you explain better.

A really good book that tackles heads from extreme angles is Burne Hogarth's "Dynamic Figure Drawing". Not everyone likes the guy but it's a very useful reference all the same. I keep it by my computer

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to thundercake [2009-01-18 19:56:19 +0000 UTC]

I think I downloaded that book from somewhere before, thats where I sort of picked up angles as well XD He breaks it down so well...

thundercake In reply to shingworks [2009-01-18 20:15:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...I'm a fangirl

I tried reading the Loomis books but they are almost incomprehensible to me. All that geometric plotting and whatnot.. yikes.

But I have to tackle it eventually :<

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to thundercake [2009-01-18 22:26:19 +0000 UTC]

Yes, eventually... that is how I feel about perspective D: I know it is in my future, like death, but I don't want to think about it.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

thundercake In reply to shingworks [2009-01-19 01:04:14 +0000 UTC]

My problem is that I don't want to paint something I will regret one day, which is probably why I don't learn. I look back on my old pictures and hate myself, but when I do something with architecture or perspective, I hate myself as I am right now.

I never start out with a circle and a line to draw my faces.
But they look fiiiiine!

Right, anyway. Thems are some sexy lips.

How old were you when you drew the little person at the beginning?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to Lyesmith [2009-01-18 19:57:08 +0000 UTC]

I was 14 or so XC I had a few pages of comic (the same one I'm working on now, haha) that I tried to start and obviously it was pretty FAIL

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 0

Sheana In reply to ??? [2009-01-18 19:37:36 +0000 UTC]

I love drawing faces! They're my favorite part of drawing stuff, I don't care about your precious backgrounds or anything else. Noses, hair, et cetera!

Unless they're relatives, I like to see if I can come up with a different nose, face and hair shape for each individual character. It's a fun challenge!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

shingworks In reply to Sheana [2009-01-18 19:57:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're a person who does a lot of great face shapes/ variation despite having a cleaner style! Its fun to see you work within your constraints like that.

I never thought about using a brow line. Eyes, nose, mouth, yes, but not a brow. I shall give it a shot. Thanks for the tut!

And, oh no you didn't. The anime fantards are gonna go berserk. Take pictures, kay? I'm always up for a laugh.

lol thanks XD Yeah the brow line is good so I can get a sense of the emotion I want to convey, since they are essential...
