Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

I'd always been taught to use straight guidelines on faces, but curving them is so simple and obvious its brilliant. I think I may just have to try that from now on.

I'm glad XD Yeah straight lines can work, but they're a little inflexible. You can get a lot more mileage out of them if you curve them to fit the face/ emotions :3

do you ALWAYS use guidelines though? Like, ALWAYS? because when i do use them, i then get lazy and go "meh" and end up drawing freehand anyway. I suppose it takes longer in the short of things because then i can only ESTIMATE how things should go. But then most of my lineart ends up lame and generic and dont get me started on expressions because i am a cowardly lion at doing them.

Not always! at least, not up until a month or so ago. Then I realized what a huge retard I was being so now I try to at least go back retroactively and check my work with guidelines before I submit it. Look at the "hi pinter" piece in my gallery, I loved it at the time but now the only thing I see is how terrible the skull/mouth dynamic is D:

nah, i'd relax. isnt that the point of unrealistic stuff, though? to defy anatomical rules? and SHUSH your complaining, i love that picture.

Yeah it is. But I've been reading John K's blog and he makes the good point that the best cartoons, even though they might look crazy, still have their grounds in good form and structure.

Very nice! And helpful! It serves as a great reminder to pay extra attention to the face instead of just going for the same stereotypical face shape every time. Awesome work! Thanks a bunch for another awesome tutorial.

but for manny if they never liked shitty anime they never would have started drawing (but unlike myself, most people get stuck with drawing anime style... poor things...)
I will take this all into consideration to make myself a better artist!

i was always been bad at drawing those circles and ovals with perspective line of mouth-n-eyes things... and your style is so unique i just dont understand how implement this to mah drawing D:
š: 0 ā©: 1
shingworks In reply to IvikN [2009-01-19 21:56:46 +0000 UTC]
Well the circles and lines are pretty standard, but you can choose the proportions of the face that look best to you. I tend to overemphasize the eyes and nose, and weaken the chin, so my sketches sort of look that way anyways. When you draw yours you can make the underlying proportions however look best to you, but with the structure it will be more anatomically correct.

Hypogeum In reply to ??? [2009-01-18 18:23:47 +0000 UTC]
Hm, most of the time I go without guidelines since what I do is take the generic anime shovel-face (the base I usually go by doesn't actually look like a shovel since I prefer a more square-jaw so my drawings can't go around accidentally stabbing their own necks by nodding "yes") and kind of laffy-taffy it up so I get whatever it was I was aiming for. It works, too, if only because I know what's going on under the skin. THANK YOU GOOGLE.
Tried guidelines and they tend to take away from what I'm aiming for; makes the face a bit too rigid. Probably because I don't use them enough to know how to work with them (i.e. around them).

shingworks In reply to Hypogeum [2009-01-18 18:31:10 +0000 UTC]
I totally agree. For my more dynamic faces I tend to work backwards, draw the face first then go around in PS and transform the mistakes into beautiful things :3 For super super cartoony stuff though I guess all rules are off.

That would be a Shoop-da-Whoop chinchilla, if I'm correct.
Thus, the epicfail of normal proportions and whatnot. xD
