✖ P E R S O N A L I T Y:

{ Creative | Social | Low-Tolerance | Careful | Loyal }

 Creative: he's good at jury-rigging things long enough to get more permanent parts, and if he needs something from his surroundings he will find a way to get it
 Social: he grew up around a lot of people and a lot of animals, and while he's not a social butterfly, he's a social creature in general and before the virus, would tend to go where the people were
 Low-Tolerance: mistakes kill people or animals, and he has little to no patience for stupid mistakes that could have been thought through and avoided. IE, shooting something out of reach and having the dead flock to where the shot was
 Careful: no one can accuse him of not being cautious. he tries to think through things before taking action, sometimes on short notice, and will choose the least destructive path if possible
 Loyal: once you've made friends with him, you have a friend for life. he won't double cross you and he'll come after you if you get in trouble. he's a good person to be friends with in general

✖ H I S T O R Y:

Chris was born, raised, lived, and worked on a family ranch with his two brothers, parents, and a couple of stablehands there to help with the horses and cattle. Life was good.
    One morning, he and his family received a rude awakening around three AM to horses screaming. His brothers got out there before he could, and started trying to scatter the horses and the cattle because a couple of men were attempting to literally eat them. On her way by, Chris caught his horse (Rachel) and hopped on bareback, riding over to help his brothers only to watch one get a gaping hole ripped in his throat and the other disappear under three or four shambling men.
    When one of these men started towards him and Rachel, the two of them took off to wait until daylight. They returned to a couple of dead horses and cattle, stripped almost to the skeleton. His brothers were long dead, his parents were missing (but there was blood in the house), and Chris picked up a few things and left hay out for any horses or cattle that might wander back home. There was nothing on the radio in the stables, not on any channel at that point, and their car was missing, so he tacked Rachel up and the two of them left. A quick ride along the road towards the city had him and Rachel running into several more of the shamblers, and the outskirts of the city had them in larger quantities, so he steered them clear without losing any limbs.
    Not long after this he stumbled into a couple of scavengers from the Ranchers faction. Long story short, he pitched the idea of making like a lost puppy and following them home, and was allowed in-- with reservations. He's still trying to prove himself within the faction.

✖ C O M P A N I O N S:
 Name: Rachel
 Breed: Quarter Horse x Mustang Cross
 Height: 16 hh
 Sex: Mare
 Coat: Red Dun
 Personality: Testy, sensitive, flighty, cautious, intelligent
 History: Rachel was an accidental foal out of one of the ranch's most affectionate mares (and Chris's main horse). It wasn't until nearly three months into her pregnancy that Chris realized something was up and called for the vet, at which point it could be calculated when the breeding could have occurred. Despite the best care possible for her mother, Rachel's dam died during a complication with her birth, leaving the filly orphaned and in Chris's care.
    Rachel was raised to adulthood (milk from nanny goats bottle-fed sustained her through weaning age) with few to no catastrophes, save one time as a yearling when she got her leg caught in some rabbit wire. Chris took over her training entirely once she had been familiarized with basic groundwork, and as a result she's very attuned to Chris, what he wants, and how he expresses certain things. Similarly, he knows almost all of her signs or tells. This is part of what currently lets them work so effectively as a team, and what used to let them cut cattle so quickly. This is also the reason she knows what bad habits she can get away with around Chris.
    She's wise to trail faults, which also makes any dubious cross country traveling much safer. Well... a little safer. At more than one point over treacherous terrain, Chris dismounted and tied her reins up, took hold of her tail, and let Rachel find the safest route across an area.

✖ O T H E R:
 Calls Rachel his "cow pony" or his "pony," despite the fact she's sixteen hands.
 Knows how to shoe a horse because if all else failed, he could find a job with that. At least his pony can go barefoot, though.
 He says that his carving is a completely useless skill, and is good for nothing but making things to look at, but if it came down to it he can carve small tools out of a good piece of wood.

Another handsome rancher ~

I really love your boy though! he seems really sweet but doesn't take flake at the same time,
a wonderful combo! also Rachel is the cutest! love how he calls her his "pony" even though she is a big one, haha!
totally guilty of doing the same to my 15.2+hh mare xD
also horse shoeing is a very creative and helpful trait to have in this group!  need someone to care for the hooves after all! c;

Why thank you! I tried to mix a bunch of random stuff that would also work! And he'll be happy to trim the feet of all the ponies on the property. That's something he can do, after all.

I used to call my 16.2 gelding a pony so I feel you.
