dulcimers are generally played on the lap either with a bow or by fingering, yes. the style of dulcimer chosen for this image however is a cutaway dulcimer, which because of its shape can also be played in a "guitar position". i figured for a bard that having to sit down every time you wanted to use magic in a battle would be incredibly inconvenient, so i chose this style on purpose. however, i did still take some artistic liberties with having the character playing it standing without including either a strap or her lap to stabilize it, lol
