Lights Out

Characters:
Jeff: College Football player
Dan: Jeff’s friend, teammate, and roommate
Alex: nerdy roommate of Jeff and Dan
Mr. Collins: Grumpy old English teacher

Setting
It’s a stormy Friday night and Jeff, Dan, and Alex are stuck in their dorm room with nothing to do.

Act 1
The lights go up to reveal a slightly messy dorm room.  Jeff is sitting on a couch facing the audience and holding a controller as if playing a video game. Dan is sitting next to Jeff on the couch and Alex is doing homework at a table near the back of the room. Various video game sounds are heard.

Jeff: Seems sucked into the video game “Quick! Which combo was for the “Ultimate Destruction” thingy again?”
Dan: Nonchalantly takes a sip of his soda. “A and Y.”
Jeff: “Because I have to knock out this alien weapon system. What was the next letter again?”
Dan: “Y.”
Jeff: “I already told you why! Which button is it?”
Dan: “Y!!”
Jeff: “Stop asking that! Is it B?”
Dan: “No. Y.”
Jeff: “ARRGG! You idiot! Which button is-“
A Boom and a gory scream echoes from video game. Jeff throws his hands up in disgust.
Alex: “He meant the button Y.”
Dan: “I told you so.” smirks
Jeff: “Shut up.”
Brief pause. Thunder can be heard out side.
Jeff: “Great! First I lose and then the storm gets worse! What else can go wrong?”
Thunder cracks then the lights flicker out. Brief pause.  Alex flips open his cell phone and resumes his homework by the light of the screen.
Dan: “Okaaaaaay… now what?”
Jeff: Flips open his cell phone and shines the light in Dan’s face. “You tell me.”
Dan: “First, get that light out of my face. Second, let’s prank call someone.”
Jeff: “Nah, we did that earlier. Remember?”
Dan: “Oh.”
Alex: “How about we do our-”
Jeff & Dan: Abruptly “NO.”
Dan: “Well, I’m officially bored now.
Jeff gets a sly smile on his face.
Jeff: “We could see what the girls are up to.”
Dan: “Yeah, lets do it!”
Jeff and Dan stand up and move to the door at stage right. Jeff exits.
Alex: “Uh, guys, I- I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Dan: “Aw, a little spying never hurt anybody. ‘Sides, what can go wrong?”
Dan exits.
Alex: Mutters “Bad idea.”
~End of Act 1~

Act 2
Lights flicker back on and Alex is reading a book on the couch. Jeff and Dan sulk back into the dorm room.
Alex: “Oh, you’re back. How’d it go?”
Jeff: “Terrible. We got caught by Mr. Collins before we could do anything.”
Dan: “That old Turd! He never lets us have any fun!” Kicks the table and immediately regrets it as he jumps around on one foot in pain.
Jeff and Alex desperately try to keep from laughing.
Dan: “Not funny guys!”
Jeff: “It is when it happens to you!”
Jeff bursts out in laughter.  Dan swats Jeff on the head with a couch cushion. Jeff responds by hitting Dan with another pillow. They begin the WW III of pillow fights while Alex resumes reading.
Jeff and Dan: Excited Ad-libbing. (Examples: Is that the best you can do? You call that pillow fighting? You’re going down! Etc.)
Someone bangs on the door
Mr. Collins: “What’s all that racket in there?” Opens the door the get smacked in the face by Jeff’s pillow.
Jeff: “Uh oh.”
Dan: “We’re dead.”
Alex: “I didn’t do it!”
Mr. Collins stares coldly at Jeff and Dan.
Mr. Collins: Adjusts his glasses. “My office. NOW.”
Jeff & Dan: “Yes, Mr. Collins.” They exit.
Mr. Collins: “You too, Alex.”
Alex: Puts down his book and moves towards the door. “But I didn’t do anything!”
Mr. Collins grabs Alex by the shoulder and drags him out the door. They exit.
