I think I see the problem here. Dash tricked Twilight into playing a game that only she knows the rules to. Whatever it is, it clearly isn't chess.

Well, I play chess, if that's what you mean. There's no “jumping over” pieces in chess; that's checkers (and a bunch of other, lesser known games). Neither is capturing pieces the point of the game. Chess is a strategy game; almost the exact opposite of the randomness of, say, tic-tac-toe. The goal is to out-maneuver your opponent and corner their king, which involves thinking many moves ahead.
There are also more than just pawns in the game; there's the king (of course), the queen, knights, rooks, and bishops. From both the picture and the dialogue, therefore, it is pretty clear that they aren't playing chess.

Chess is a completely different kind of thinking than Twilight is used to. Twilight is all about memorization, but in chess you have to be flexible.
