Here's how I imagine it goes down:
Tadashi Hamada, a top-rated Jaeger pilot, is unique among his peers, a scientist first and foremost, in contrast to the primarily military members of the Ranger ranks respected as much for his brains as his skills as a pilot; in a land of jocks, the nerd is king. His primary work is in A.I., planning newer and more intelligent systems to run Jaegers, ones that would lessen the strain on a lone pilot in case of emergencies. This project, code-named "Baymax", is his life's work. One day, his brother Hiro sneaks inside to see what his brother was working on, and then a monster attacks. Hiro finds himself falling into the cockpit. Though the pair prove to be highly drift-compatible, Tadashi's concern for his brother is his undoing.
