Hush wayward 'yote
hold your tongue against a cry
Keep you still, don't you run
when huntin' dogs are close by

Keep your belly down
nose up, tail low
Keep your ears wide open
when they're scenting to and fro

Who knows if they'll pass over
where you hunker and you bide
Or the fickle wind betray you
and cruel teeth'll pierce your hide

So keep the green deep forest
a mile between you and they
And pick up your trottin' feet
when huntin' dogs start to bay
