Description
This is a monitor lizard I saw in Zambia. It was one large lizard, and it hung out in this tree, seeming to try hard to blend in. I am not certain of the exact kind of lizard and would appreciate any input on that; regardless of his species, he was a handsome gent! I was very impressed by his clawsβwould not want to get too close to those!Taken in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

If I'm not mistaken, it's a Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus).
They are quite common to that region.

Thanks for the input. I thought our guide said it was a water monitor, but I've seen pix of those that look pretty different than this guy, which led me to second-guess my recollection. If not a water monitor, my other guess would be rock monitor, but I just really don't know my lizards!
