Description I can't take full credit for this one, because I didn't buy or make the army figure, or the sticker, or the string. I do take credit for finding it in the middle of the street, and I do take credit for making the string a noose, as it was tied to the soldier's leg when I found it. Had a right time getting it off, too, you know how I am with knots.

I put this under Photomanipulation because it went through quite a bit of editing, but none which particularly mattered, as it still ended up looking like crap. >_> I digitally took a few notches out of the sides of the note, and I darkened, then gamma-corrected the background. I also fiddled with the string color until it was the one I wanted, and I snipped off bits and pieces of the soldier until he looked right (but not the area around the gun, that just looked weird to begin with). The picture was poor quality to begin with, as it was taken with my cameraphone, but I went with it.

I actually took two pictures of this and edited them both to see how they'd turn out, and it turns out I liked this one better. The camera angle's better, too, I think.

Well, that's that, and I hope you like it. And please critique me on this, I really have absolutely no credentials or skills as a photographer and I would like to maybe get a little bit better so that I can take better advantage of my woeful cameraphone capabilities.

Hehe, me neither. It's that straight-edged thing pointing down-ish on the army guy's left side. I tried to make it more distinctive, but it was pretty challenging with such crappy picture quality. *shuns both Bush and his cameraphone*

And yes, I do have a higher tendency to find interesting things because I'm always picking up things from off the ground. Yeah, it's not exactly hygienic, but it makes for a good Deviation!

yeah i love the angling too!! ^__^ ditto ann. *shuns bush* (with a little less violence)

suggestion: the background is kinda plain. its dark, which is good but i think you should have put a little glare or a spotlight thingie or something on the soldier from a completely different angle. unless you intended for the background to be entirely black. but hey, i'm not the greatest photographer either, so what would i know?

Thanks for the angular compliment. That sounds very mathematical...anyway.

I put this under the Political category because I didn't intend for this picture of an army man and a sticker (the note is actually a sticker, though you can't tell from the picture) to be just a photo of an army man and a sticker. Which is why I edited it. The original photograph is lighter and shinier (ooh, shiny!), and it was taken during the daytime, when my room is lit rather brightly from all sides.

One of the reasons that this picture wasn't posted in two seconds was because I did spend a lot of time on the lighting - or, rather, post-lighting, as most of the light and dark effects were done after the picture was taken. The only parts of the picture I lightened were the note and the noose, as they are the parts of the picture that I want to emphasize the most. I want you (the viewer) to see those parts and have them stand out for you. Conversely, I darkened both the background and the army figure significantly. I wanted the army figure darkened because he's fading away and dying, and I had to get a certain balance of color there, because he couldn't be so dark that you couldn't see him or that he didn't stand out, but he also couldn't be so light that he didn't contrast enough with the rope around his neck. The background, in my view, needed to be dark because he doesn't know the way, and he's losing his support, which I both attributed to his surroundings.

Also, if you'll open the full-view, the background is not entirely black...I think this is once again partly a case of you missing the full-view image.

In short, I did actually have a reason for darkening the background, and if you think it's wrong, please tell me why, because right now I don't agree with you on this one.

-----

I'm rereading this comment I'm about to make, and I think I sound a bit pushy and arrogant, so just know that it's not because I don't value your critiques, but because I don't agree with this one and I thought you should know why. Don't hesitate to comment back and give me feedback.

nah sok. (you are _not_ arrogant) an artist sticks to their own opinions. i don't mind. i'll be that way sometimes as well. it's the bitchy side of the artist. ^^

i don't think its wrong. art can never be done "wrong", like music, it depends on how the artist interprets everything. so i respect it.

what i was thinking was to give more of a contrast by an extremely faint spotlight from a completely different angle, which leads the eye to the focus of the photo, thus the brighter color of the soldier/note/noose. but if you don't wanna, you don't have too. ^^ (i know the background isn't all one shade, but that strip of lighter shading is so close to the main background color, the overall effect is just-- dark (*rolls eyes* i can't find another word to describe it.... this is why i'm not a writer... ). so..... thats about it.

*stabs bush* dumb american....
