Heck, I was a shy guy growing up (still am, really, but luckily I'm married now) and I would have loved to have a "friend" like Ed. After all, he did get Belle did say out loud that she wanted Joey to ask her out. The girls in my neck of the woods would never say anything like that...you're just expected to be willing to risk the humiliation. And of course, shy guys like me...weren't willing.
It actually looks to me like Ed got the ball rolling big time.
