"What happened to your hair?" Melissa asked when I got out of my car, "and your clothes, and makeup and you! Did you get in a fight with the mirror or what?" she leaned closer to my ear, "you look like one of those freaks." She scolded.
"Firstly, I cut it because it was a horrid pain. I chose to dress like this because it is who I really am and why's it matter how I dress? I'm still Katie." I smiled pushing my large white sunglasses back up my nose.
I walked alone to the center commons and sat happily at my usual table with Jessica and Derrick. They were talking quietly when I sat down beside them. Both of them looked up slowly, as if they were caught off guard. I smiled and stared back at them from behind my sunglasses.
"Uh, Katie? What the hell is that?" Jessica scrutinized every inch of my outfit.
"It's me; do you have a problem with that?" I asked pushing my hair out of my eyes.
"Katie; I'm not sure if you've noticed this, but you look like a fucking freak. I don't hang out around that kind and why would you ever choose to look like them? I mean, look at Matt Sanders for example," she pointed him out as he walked in the school with his hair slicked back, heavy eyeliner, a pair of black Tripp shorts, and a Primus shirt, "he has the potential to be beautiful. He's muscular, plays a sport, and has a beautiful smile, but he spends all his time with that Valary DiBendetto, girl, and all the rest of the freaks. Not to mention, he's absolutely covered in those god awful tattoos and dresses terribly." She smiled, self-satisfied.
"I was 'one of them' before I came to California and let people like you ruin me. And I have some of those 'god awful tattoos' and I'm damn proud of them." I stood up and showed them the 1940's pin-up girl on my left calf.
"This is totally hot Katie, but she's right, you're too pretty to be a freak and Sanders is a fucking looser. Come back into the light and quit being stupid."" Derrick smiled taking my hand.
"No! If you all can't accept me for who I really am you're really not all that good of friends to me." I stated clearly.
"We are good friends Katie, but look at them," she turned my attention towards Matt sitting beside the tan one sleeping on top of a table. "They're all really weird, especially Sanders. He's stupid for choosing them over a potentially normal and popular high school career." Jessica sighed looking away as Matt stood from the table and walked in our general direction.
"Quit talking shit on everyone then hiding behind a 'pretty' face; especially with Matt. He hardly knows me, but he cares more than any of you. Fuck off!" I snarled as I walked away to join Matt as he walked past.
"To what do I owe this pleasure?" he chuckled as I huffed angrily.
"Jimmy was completely right yesterday, Every last one of them would just as soon stab me in the back than accept me for me; bitches." I laughed as we circled back around to the table Matt had come from.
Everyone from yesterday, except Jimmy, was there now. Val was even there with another girl that bared a striking resemblance. They all looked oblivious to their surroundings as they talked quietly. I sat down beside Matt as he took a seat beside Val. Everyone looked up slowly, except tan boy, when we sat down. Great, I was going to be rejected by the freaks.
"Hi." I murmured looking at the table.
"I figured you'd abandoned us after yesterday at the pizza place. You clean up pretty good.: the kid with green eyes smiled, Zacky, I think.
"Yeah, sorry about that; I can be a bitch sometimes. And thanks, I try." I smiled across the table.
The tan boy woke up slowly and looked at me as if I had a horn growing out of my head.
"Well this is new. How is it that every time I go to sleep something new happens?" he sighed hiding his eyes beneath a fedora.
"Brian, shut up. You sleep through life. Anyway, we've adopted Katie now." Matt smiled
"Sweet, well I'm Brian Haner, know me, love me." He smiled at me.
"Bri, you're such an ass. I'm Michelle DiBendetto, Val's twin. A suggestion to you, ignore everything he says." The other girl smiled looking at Brian.
"Can do; nice to meet you." I smiled down the table at her.
"So, can I ask why you have chosen to join us so suddenly? Oh, and why does Matt act like your big brother all of the sudden?" Val asked happily.
"Well, hack home, this is who I really was, but when we moved here I got the absurd idea that no one would accept me if I wasn't a blonde, beach bunny. As far as Matt; he showed up in the middle of a meltdown last night. Having a minor personality crisis in an empty house sucks!" I laughed at myself
"Leave it to Matt to take care of someone he hardly knows." Val commented making Matt blush slightly.
"Okay, I have an honest question for you Katie." Zacky started seriously, "did I really stink yesterday?"
We all burst out laughing instantly, "No, I just make stupid faces." I laughed a little more.
"Hey Jim, done tormenting the population?" Brian smiled at a flushed Jimmy over my shoulder.
There was no response, just slightly heavy breathing for a minute, "Today was more fun than usual, but, uh, who is this?" he asked, presumably pointing to me.
"Dude, Katie? You're retarded Rev." Zacky laughed shaking his head.
Jimmy leaned over my shoulder and stared me in the face. I waved and smiled carefully, holding his gaze. His eyes seemed to be searching for some part of the other girl he had met, the critical, beach bunny. But I never was that person; he was searching for a lie.
