Description
Bach is the beauty of a well-oiled machine. A perfect system. The music is clean and metallic, operating at a smooth speed with no pauses until the task is finished. It is frightening in its speed, but comforting in its constancy. The music must be learned so thoroughly that you can forget all about it. The fingers must be able to play independently of the brain. Playing Bach is like meditating, the mind is clear of everything, and the hands play on.Satie is the beauty of an abstract painting. Discordant to the point of jarring, always turning this way and that, never the way you’d expect. Each unfamiliar note is like a flash of bright colour to the listener and the performer’s ear. The music must be balanced, to illuminate but never overwhelm. Playing Satie is like dancing; it must be so tightly controlled that it appears natural.
Debussy is the beauty of a smooth river. The notes fall one after another, each one as a single drop of water combining to form a sound that soothes and cleanses. It is light and quick, but always smooth, always gentle. Playing Debussy is like singing lullabies. Soft, enchanting, and beautiful.
Piazzolla is the beauty of an open flame. Daring and exciting, it invites the listener to imagine. It enchants in a different way, drawing the listener to the darker more sensual parts of the human mind. Passionate and intriguing, it ignites desire. Playing Piazzolla is like fencing. It is quick, it is sharp, it is exciting and leaves you breathless.
Rachmaninoff is the beauty of a thunderclap and a tidal wave. The beauty of raw power and emotion. Each monumental chord rocks the players soul, as the heart races along with the fast lines and weeps at the heartbreaking slow lines. It is passion, aggression, exultation and sometimes desperation. It touches the heart and wrings forth the most powerful sensations. Playing Rachmaninoff is like crying, an outpouring of the soul, the human existence at its most open and vulnerable moments, at the highest ecstasy and the most crushing despair.
