Irrelevant when your computer is on and in usage. This is for the paranoid at heart, and for those who own a newer CPU with a miniature cellphone chip built into the CPU itself. Parts are ready to be assembled, whenever I get around to it.

The little modification / addition goes in between the hard drive's power input and the juice supply from the computer's power supply. The LED will always be on, when you're using your highly suspect and long-observed computer activity, especially if you run some weird and highly secure OS like any of the BSD variants, perhaps especially the purist's minimal almost unhackable preference, OpenBSD.

Of course, it's another matter entirely to have a few dozen built-in hardware backdoors, in any machine on the planet. Someone wouldn't cooperate with the new and quietly lurking replacement administrations, regarding the removal of unknown and unauthorized soft and hard access to all computational devices everywhere including yours, as a theoretical but hardly likely possibility barely considered aside from a humourous mental exercise or two of course.

The stubborn and uncooperative founder of the given company in question, supposedly got heart-attacked, by way of simple rumour and strategic sterilization, it could be assumed. Not that sneaky targeted assassinations haven't happened on this planet for a few thousand years already.

Maybe the Intel junk will be a bit more secure, in the near-future. Until then, maybe consider a Russian designed and manufactured computer, or at least a Russian-brewed Linux-based operating system. Which will make you more suspicious, of course, until such time as a long-planned comprehensive shift occurs on this planet, scheduled since the beginning of time, you might say. Might be a good time to stock up on lots of spiritual popcorn, by the way. But that's another subject.

In the meantime, this little LED addition will light up in a most informative way - when your totally innocent computer's extensive porn collections are indexed and accessed, WHEN ITS POWER IS OFF.

It doesn't matter what operating system you use, by the way. The relatively new "remote admin tool" has its own, and memory etc too. It links into a nearby cell tower, and is capable of uploading and downloading easily.

Such a spy's wet dream can be used when your machine is apparently off and not in use. The cell chip feature (a huge bug perhaps?) can use the machine's phantom power, which is always available to the motherboard, in order to turn the thing on, or to use the LAN boot capability, etc.

As you sleep, your machine could be undergoing an active indexing. And then ratting you out to any interested wanna-be overlord. (Who are due to very soon to be retired, anyways, as it happens, so no worries, just hang in there.)

Another somewht exotic security add-on might be a certain class of, hmmm, off-planet tech, which sort of links your electronics to a kind of higher dimensional living and conscious "computer" running a karma-free universal OS. The details may be for the astute investigator and instigator to find. The trans-dimensional linkage provides a weird screening field, making your stuff entirely unobservable or randomized via currently restricted or forbidden technology, which also works with your own nervous system, making you physically "fuzzy" to say the very least.
