Description
One of the very first urban legend in the world is the "Spring-heeled Jack". The first claimed sighting of Spring-heeled Jack was in 1837. Spring-heeled Jack was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy, clawed hands, and eyes that "resembled red balls of fire". Many stories also mention a "Devil-like" aspect. Others said he was tall and thin, with the appearance of a gentleman. Several reports mention that he could breathe out blue and white flames and that he wore sharp metallic claws at his fingertips. At least two people claimed that he was able to speak comprehensible English. Most people saw the Spring-heeled Jack as a frightful apparition, maybe an agent of the Devil. However, there have been reports that Jack actually physically attacked people and was associated with several assaults, robberies and arson. It's unknown if the hunt for Spring-Heeled Jack has anything to do with the popular nursery rhyme:
"Jack be nimble, Jack be quick,
Jack leaps over the candle stick."
Or, as the great American songster, Don McLean wrote:
"Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick,
'Cause fire is the devil's only friend."

Endless, monotonous minutes creep through the hallways of the mind and the labyrinth of the soul where men are left to face himself and his irresistible compulsions. These unspoken forces drive our deepest desires and fuel our most profound fears. We are powerless in front of them, just as we are powerless in the face of the march of time.
Do you hear it?
They call for you in the midnight hour, whispering in your mind’s ears the most secret of secrets.
Do you see it?
They appear to you from the corner of your eye, beckoning you to follow them down the rabbit hole.
The clock chimes. It’s time to listen up and follow suit. Will you come seek us in the darkened rooms filled with echoes of the past? Will you dance with us under the garish mercury moon? Will take our hands and join us through the Longest Night?
Welcome to the “Longest Night” Challenges where we explore men’s deepest fea
P.S. I'm a judge! So I can't actually win this contest. But please join in. And if you like what I do... I offer a commission as a prize to the first place winner.

Awesome work; I love the detail on the flames and buildings.
Spring-Heeled Jack is such an interesting urban legend, especially since he's one of the earliest. Nice to see some fan art of him

Hello!
And thank you very much for the comment. I think Spring-Heeled Jack is definitely among one of the earliest urban legends, if not the first documented one. And since it has been with us for so long, there has been a lot of work done on this topic. It's a fascinating thing, really. So thank you very much for sharing this fascination. And thank you for adding it to your list of favourites. Much appreciated!

I'm glad to know this makes you happy. That's a great thing to know.
I know that I'll have to broaden my self-imposed limits for this series and this is the first where the nursery rhyme is not the direct source. (It's still here, but in a slightly less important way.) But I'm getting some pretty good feedback on it, though. So I am more relieved. And hey, if it makes you happy... that's even more important. So, thank you very much for your support!
By the way, I sent you an e-mail a couple days ago. Did you get it?

I don't know what it is, I just absolutely love solid black and white pieces. Always have. Just something that pulls me in about it over a very colorful picture. I mean, I like colors and all-- but I prefer the monochrome.
OH. I should go check again. My e-mail, that is.

Nothing wrong with that at all, my friend. If I didn't like the good, old, black-and-white, I wouldn't have decided to create this series this way. There's something about the simplicity (and in a way, the complexity) of having just black and white, not mixing. Perhaps that's why people are drawn to Rorschach blots - the black and white gives people a fertile field to run amok. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Not a problem, my friend.
Hope it'll bring a smile to your face.

Very nicely done! It's perfect for Halloween. The whole layout and the way that you did the picture itself is perfect. How he is portrayed in the different stories and then the way that he is turned into an urban legend is fascinating. I like this one a lot.

Hello!
Very happy to know that you liked this month's offering. Like what I said, I am trying really hard to keep the subject to nursery rhymes and fairy tales, but then again, I guess an urban legend is just an updated version of a fairy tale, right? There has been a number of conflicting testimonies from people who have seen Spring-heeled Jack. And this creature was said to have appeared even well into the 20th Century. I am actually of a mind that this nothing more than a legend. But legends are the most fun when everyone put their heads together to create a larger story. And that's where we are today.
So... once again, thank you very much for your very kind words. And thank you for adding it into your list of favourites.
Much appreciated.

Thanks for rousing up the spooks, good buddy!
Happy Halloween!

You know what? You've hit the nail on the head.
In one of the alternative-universe short-releases, Batman was incorporated into Spring-heeled Jack in the late Victorian era and he was tasked to hunt down Jack the Ripper. So in a way, it's true, Spring-heeled Jack is kinda like Batman with Ghost Rider's head.
Thanks for adding it to your list of favourites. Much appreciated!
