Description
Well This costume took 2 1/2 months to complete ... though it should have taken much more XP long night LONG NIGHTS!!!!!.about 600 hours in total. It is my first time ever working with armor and by far the most complicated outfit I have ever done. Also in no way could I have completed it without my lovely bride (Beautiful rose). The armor was a new and challenging experience I read a few tutorial just on how to use craft foam but I winged the design and actuall armormaking part. Honestly the pattern drafting for the armor was much harder than the construction of it due to the simple fact that RASLER IS A GIANT MATH PROBLEM!!!! I never though I would be thankful of taking calculus especially in cosplay but I am. So I drafted all the patterns for the arm armor and belt first and then constructed those. The upper arm pieces attached to my lovely blue arm socks (made by Ashe) the actually curve outward like they are suppossed to it was very hard to figure out how to make that work and I actually ended up cutting a slit halfway down from the top in the center of the piece and then inserting a triangle shaped piece of craft foam into the slot. Oh and the elbow pieces were made using the reverse of that technique and taking out the triangle and then gluing the ends together. Oh and there is wire (idk what gauage) in both the round pieces w/ the redic design on them and the elbow pieces. The fleur de lee design on those round pieces on my arms is actually raised if you can't tell and the piece itsself took and hour per arm just to cut out of craft foam not including designing or tracing it XPNext came the chest plate. Which actually the chest plate does go around my entire body and zips in the back There are many details in the back of the armor that are hidden by the cape. ( I have a butt piece that hangs off the zipper that is installed upside down and the belt actually splits into 2 pieces one end connecting to the bottom of the chest plate and the other the bottom of the butt piece.) For the construction of the chest plate I had to actually make a papertape manquinn of myself to adjust and fit the plate on (His name is zero
Next came the neckbrace. It actually opens and closes in the front w/ velcro on the backside. Its main body is made of 2 pieces one long rectangle for the neck part and the odd sholder shape part then I attached the 2 together w/ a series of small strips on the inside of the neckbrace. Model magic was used on the edges for the rounded look.
The cape, loincloths (there are 2 one in the back and one in the front), my pants and my lame excuse for a shirt ( its like a 5 inch long rectangle around my body) were all made and painted by Ashe. The capes design was hand drawn by her over a day and then painted inone more 16 hour day I believe. The inside is painted too there are symbols @ they bottom and lines of diamonds that go all the way up the inside of the cape. Oh and the cording on the pants was actually spraypainted to match the color of the pants XD
Finally came the boots. THE ULTIMATE DEVIL OF THIS COSTUME!!! The boots are actually covers if you havn't guessed yet They are mainly made of craft foam and unzip in the back so I can get my feet in oh and the boots I actually wear come out of the cover through a door thing i made on the bottom of the covers. The boots were designed specifically to do the retarded duck foot thing that raslers do and then the many extra pieces were added to the base. Also There is a detail piece on the back of the boot
Oh and the wig was styled by me in about 2 hours and I know someone pointed it out the wig actually is darker at the base and gets lighter toward the tips. Also as Ashe said in her description the armor was coated in 2 ifferent types og gold and a gloss and the white was first painted with many coats of glossy white and then topped with a metallic pearl white for a nice sheen. Also if anyone is interested in seeing the sort of construction of the armor I have WIP pics in my progress gallerly,
Fun Fact Time: Each individual belt link has 10 pieces on it and there are 30 belt links so there are over 300 pieces in just the belt O.o Oh and if you didn't guess my range of motion sucks in this costume but If you see me at a con and you ask I will do the robot bc that is about the extent of my motion right there.

its just pieces of craft foam heated with an iron and slightly curved then glued together with super glue.

Your hair alone looks awesome, but if we move on to the costume itself... it leaves me speechless x.x So detailed and accurate... if Final Fantasy XII's ever going to be turned into a movie adaptation, be sure to apply for Rasler!

well well, its golden, its white, and there are a thousand details on your cosplay......and the best part are the details nobody can see *_______* that i totally adoreable
be sure that u have my highest regards for that incredible shit of work >D
but i really dont get how u made all those pieces out of craft foam....any hints? i mean u have to put another layer over the foam...right...hm...*thinks*...hm...
but yeah til now my favourite cosplay all over the world....and i havent even played the game (lol)...but it just looks so cool.... *hears angelic choir singing*

lol its ok to be honest .... i havn't played the game either XDDDD but i have watched people play parts and from what i hear its really good. lol but yaaa the designs from 12 are sooo cool
... by another layer are you asking about how I layer the craft foam or how I prepare it for painting? if its the first I just spend a long time looking at the picture and caculate the approximate depth of the designs as in 1 layer of craft foam or 2 layers or maybe 2 layers of craftfoam and then a layer of posterboard to give it that tiny hint of height over something else.
if its the 2nd what I do once I have the craftfoam piece made is I paint mod podge (a clear sealer often used on top of puzzles to save them and keep them together) to seal the top surface. Otherwise the craftfoam will suck in the paint and make any metallic or glossy paint dull. after about 2-3 coats of that I paint the rest with whatever color of acrylic paint I desire and then a gloss if necessary.
There is also a 2nd way people do that I havn't tried yet but hope to which involves cutting styrene to the shape of the craft foam layers and then gluing it to the top so you have a nice slick smooth surface. granted I havn't tried this but I would assume if you would go to this trouble I would assume it would be best if you used spray paint to take full advantage of the smoothness of the styrene and avoid brush strokes

aaaaw, thank u soo much for answering, i really appreciate it when other cosplayers give me a despription of how they made something :3
i have just another few questions:
where did u get your craft foam, cause all i found was a package of sheets in all colour, which is meant for use of kindergardeners, hmmm...maybe its different in austria, but i really dont know where to get some white big sheets of craft foam (...it also took me a while to find the german word for craft foam...its not in the dictionary xD...and here its called "moosgummi", and nobody uses it ever o.O, i think most of the people wouldnt even know what 'moosgummi' was if i asked them -.-'
and i read that the craft foam can be shaped by heating it...what did u use for the heating?
and...do u know if i can shape it like a bowl, f.e. for shoulder armor? i ask cause its not very logical to make a hemisphere out of a sheet...i had to find that out when i was a little kid and tried to make a ball out of paper grrr xDD
*sigh* i hope u understand what i mean xD...sometimes i really hate that i wasnt born in a english-speaking country XD
and exactly that problem brings me to my last question:
...what is styrene?...all i found on the internet was the molecular formula of it xDDD
okay, and now i feel very sorry for wasting ur time and i wish i could return the favor (lol if u ever visit austria and want a sightseeing tour...we have a lot of epic castles and hundreds of shops where u can buy stuff of mozart XDDD)

lol ah its no problem. in English a brand of craft foam you might want to search for is Foamies you might be able to find someone who ships internationally.
I have never bought from these people bc I buy all my craft foam locally at Joann( which might ship international but idk) but here is a pic of what I buy and this site does ship international.
[link] rd=1022-71%28ConsumerCrafts%29
basically I but a roll of craft foam that is 60" long by like 36" wide that like 1m by 1 1/2 m .... i think ahhh havn't done conversions in awhile. but anyway I find the roll is a better way to buy bc A. its cheaper in the long run but also you can get things like chestplates all on one piece. The sheets will work fine if thats all you can find and don't want to buy off the internet. It just might make it harder if you have big pieces but not impossible. and lol ya this stuff typically is meant for little kids joann is the only place here that I can find the rolls everywhere else only has the sheets. typically here I pay 9$ a roll without a coupon 6$ with a coupon just so you know that way you can check to make sure its a decent price.
Yes it can be heated I use an ordinary clothing iron. Hold it on the craftfoam for a few seconds then hold it to the shape you want it in while it cools which will take maybe 30 seconds. Now the craft foam will get really flexible obviously and to make small dome shapes I often keep the iron on it until the craft foam sticks to the iron then peel it off. I do this (only with dome or extremely curved pieces and works better with smaller pieces) bc then the craft foam will curve in on itsself. this means that you just slighty hold down the piece til it is as deep os you want the curve. but if the curve you want is really shallow or specific to a shape you want to stretch over that might not be the best thing to do. That is better when you are jsut creating the shape not trying to stretch it over something else. To stretch it over something else just hold the iron on it shorter so that way it doesnt stick to the iron which will make it flexible but not curl up on itsself.
basically just test it out on scrap pieces first til you have the feel of what you are doing. but dont fret if you mess up bc you can just re heat it and fix it.
I would not use this for sholder armor !. bc I don't think a large piece will curve that well especially if you are trying to make a dome shape. B it won't have enough support from one layer of carft foam for a sholder dome. For that since I don't know what you sholder thing looks like if its completely round I have seen many people get the giant plastic christmas ornaments and cut a portion. Also I have seen if its more liek a coner shaped piece but smooth joint I have see people use large pvc elebows and carve those. And if its an odd bowl shape you can do it like I did my cecil sholder pieces and first just take foamboard ( the poster boards that have a foam core. and bend one piece then have a flat end and just cut off pieces and replace them with flat sections til it is reletativly the right shape then cover it with some sort of air dry clay (I suggest creative paperclay if you can find it) I can help with more specifics if you need it if you show me a picture of what you are trying to make.
styrene is thin plastic sheets. you can find it in model shops a lot of times. I know we use it in my architecture classes to represent glass though it isn't always clear.
here is an example [link]
this is a good tutorial that uses styrene if you are interested in that [link]
I will say though in that tutorial she use hotglue as her adhesive which works but I prefer to use superglue gel with craftfoam but its just a personal thing both work

oh, thanks for the tutorials, ill read through them when i have time...i love tutorials *___*
i intend to make zacks shoulder thingis xDD
[link]
i heard from a lot of people who did that cos that they used modelling clay...but i thought that there might be a better method, that's why i'm asking
then ill need it for another cosplay and thats flynn scifo from Tales of Vesperia
[link] (i dunno when i will do that cosplay, but atm i'm just obtaining information)
and for haseo [link] (which i will definitely not cosplay this year, cause i have no time for that..but maybe next year...)
lol i know that superglue always wins against hotglue XD...cause when i made the shoes of my sora cos, i first glued it with hot glue...but after a few steps the sole went off...then i found superglue and it changed my life |D...since that time, i always carry around super glue when i'm at cons...and a lot of cosplayers with broken things were very thankful for that xDDD
thanks for ur help^^

I lost respect for square enix's outlook on beautiful people. As I was told, it's for asians/whites only as the only time anyone else is there, we look like animals just as displayed in twelve. [link] I am a nobody for now but everyone will know who I am when My development blows up and when it happens i will call square enix on it on the spot.

Sating the obvious or nitpicking too much?
The way you worded didn't entirely make clear sense either.

Oh so then I'm going to go with nitpicking too much. It was mainly the "My Development" that makes no sense. What do you even mean by that.
Also there are people besides whites/asians in other FF games. Sorry that you feel bad about FFXII not having any outside of being Viera (who are not animals by the way, they are considered their own race).
Besides, SE is a Japanese company, why wouldn't the characters all be Asian influenced?
