Description
Pirate. Ready. Fight.
Isato Kanenami (金波 勇人) is a deeply driven man, who believes in self-expression, doing what makes you happy and living life to the fullest. Unfortunately, the world he lives in isn't well-suited to his ideals, and his willingness to push past any potential consequences for his actions has led him to be heavily in debt and pursued by the Yakuza for payment. Because of this, Kanenami has joined the Desire Grand Prix as Kamen Rider Mogul, aiming to use his wish to create "A world where I can do what I want without fearing the consequences".
When found in the Desire Grand Prix's lobby, Kanenami is friendly, gregarious and encouraging, willing to share words of advice and debate philosophy with his fellow Riders... but while not a facade, his friendliness distracts from an utter ruthlessness and willingness to do whatever is necessary to put him ahead of his rivals. Kanenami will freely backstab, manipulate and exploit any weakness he can find to make sure he can get what he wants.
While Kanenami has been known to use the Armed Drill and Armed Claw buckles, the Mogul Core ID works best with the Pirate Buckle. Pirate Form is well-suited to Mogul's willingness to fight dirty, with the Prow Spike and Battery Cannons mounted in the shoulders and kneecaps encouraging the use of shoulder barges and knee strikes. The Pirate Buckle also arms the user with the Pirate Jacker, a cutlass that can be converted into a wicked hook; in hook form, the Pirate Jacker can also be swung out on a chain like a kusarigama or grappling hook, enabling Mogul to keep opponents off guard.
Kamen Rider Mogul has access to several different finishing moves, depending on his form. When using only the Pirate Buckle, these include:
- Pirate Strike (lower body) — Mogul hits his foe with a strike from his left knee, stabbing into them with the Prow Spike before unleashing a hail of point-blank shots with the Battery Cannons. Mogul then performs a somersaulting flash kick with his right foot, hitting the stunned enemy before they can recover.
- Tactical Hijack — Activating the finisher of the Pirate Jacker in hook mode, Mogul whips the hook around on its chain to ensnare his targets; he then smashes the trapped enemy repeatedly against the ground or nearby obstacles, before pulling them sharply into the path of a devastating Rider Punch.
- Tactical Lowjack — Using the finisher of the Pirate Jacker in sword mode, Mogul rapidly maneuvers into the midst of a crowd of enemies, dodging and parrying their strikes. He then performs a spinning slash attack that strikes all foes surrounding him.
First things first: Yes, I do already have a pirate-themed Rider OC . I don't care. Pirates are cool.
Since most Geats riders' names are puns on or corruptions of the animal they're based on, Mogul's name is a pun on "mogura", the Japanese word for "mole" (mogura -> mōguru); it's also a bit of an allusion to "Tycoon", which has a similar meaning. I came up with the name first, and then decided on the personality and buckle based on that.
Making a mole-based helmet was pretty difficult; Moles have very smooth, almost featureless heads, and so I had to take a bit of artistic license. I am very pleased with the rounded "eyes" with narrow slits in, though. I'm also really happy that the helmet looks fairly neutral in Entry Form, but significantly more sinister once the Pirate lower jaw gets added; it fits my conception of his character as someone who initially seems fairly harmless, but soon proves to be extremely dangerous.
Pirate Form's chest wasn't initially supposed to look like a skull - it was just meant to look like an open jacket. When I realised that the shape was there, I leaned into it. Because I'm not good at visualising 3D objects, I initially got the legs totally mixed up - the kneecaps were on the wrong sides, and the hip-skirts were the wrong way up.
To activate the Pirate Buckle, you pull the "crossbones" apart, opening the skull's jaw and causing its eye to light up. I was a bit worried that having cannons built into the suit would be too similar to Magnum Form's flip-out guns, but I think that the way the Battery Cannons' positioning incentivises unscrupulous tactics makes it feel distinct enough.
