I was so happy to see the old-school Zebesians return in Other M. The Pirates in the Prime trilogy were cool, but nothing beats these guys.

I think that overall metroid prime 1 was a 3D super metroid. the most loyal 3D incarnation.

my personal favorite has gotta be Metroid Prime, followed VERY closely by Super Metroid.
Though i say that Prime 1 was second best, because while i like Prime more, i feel that Super Metroid was the best in the franchise (in retrospect). It got everything right. Pacing, atmosphere, story, etc

I think I may be the same. I like Fusion but it's really easy, so I got the japanese version to play on hard mode, but even then the computer is still always telling you where to go.
Metroid prime was great, I didn't mind the hint system but was thankful that you could shut it off. Prime 2 was difficult, but the annoying difficult. Prime 3 was awesome but it was too much like halo and there was a lot of character interaction and talking.
Super Metroid defined the series I think. I agree it's most likely the best. Prime 1 was most loyal to the series, and it was deep too. With all the scanning and log books, there was a lot more to that game than meets the eye.

despite how bad the game might have been, you gotta give Team Ninja credit: they showed respect to enemies 2D designs and translated them PERFECTLY to 3D.

I am playing through it right now. I'm not crazy about the story or character development, but like you said the 2D to 3D..they did great. Metroid prime 1 I think is the 3d metroid that is most loyal to the 2d ones.
