My previous wing tutorial:
Yayy, more wings!
At first I was about to just redo my old wing tutorial, add a few things and explain them more thoroughly, but then I said screw that and decided to get to the main point.
I wrote the text in one night when I got really angry about some ugly wings and bad arguments for them. xD I had to clean up the text a lot afterwards though.
I decided to keep the appearance somewhat close to the previous tutorial.
Oh, and by the way: I don't own any of the bird images in this tutorial. I have gathered reference pictures on my drive and because I name them with numbers I don't know where I've got them.
So if somebody owns an image of this tutorial and doesn't want me to use it then please tell me and I'll replace or remove it.
The only photo I own is that where I brutally photoshopped my own arms. x) Oh, and the texture on the bg.
I hope you find this helpful! Questions and comments, good or bad, are welcome!
Ps. And of course there's a typo. xD Obsesive -> Obsessive

Noooo periaatteessahan täällä voi antaa niitä tähtiäkin töille, jos siinä vaan on premium-tilin kritiikkimahdollisuus käytössä
Jep, en minäkään oleta käyttäväni noita netistä etsimiäni mallikuvia missään, mutta ainakin joihinkin on silti tullut laitettua ylös osoitekin. Eihän sitä koskaan tiedä...

Certainly valid points, but like you and your wing rant I have an issue with people not crediting photographers. I see you don't have the source saved, but then why not just a take a little extra time to find new photos from DA stock ect. so you can properly credit?

The reason I didn't do that is simply that there weren't good enough photos here on dA. By "good enough" I mean that they didn't show the feathers the way I wanted to show them. And since I already had gathered good photos, it felt quite useless to start finding new photos that wouldn't have made my point as clear as the ones I already had.
And oh well. I'm not claiming the pictures as mine, I'm not using them for profit and they are just for educational purposes. So as I said in the description, if a photographer still doesn't want me to use their photo I'll remove it. If they want me to credit them, I will.
I actually tried to search for the photographers, but I know that most of my photos aren't from dA at all (and you can imagine how many photos there are of Bald Eagles for example). I often search for pictures simply from google based on the species. (because I may need ref for certain species' patterns or form) Some of the sites either don't exist anymore or the photos have been removed, because I simply can't find them anymore.
I know that the cockatoo picture is from dA and I found the photographer and linked them in the description.

I realize you are asking photographers if they want you to credit, but really whats the chance that they will stumble upon this?
I also realize you are coming from a good place, trying to provide education which is great, but I still don't think it justifies not properly crediting. To me a photograph is a piece of art and its basically like using someone elses art in your tutorial and not crediting. I know there is nothing you can do now the tutorial is already made, but I hope next time you will sacrifice some extra time or vision to use photos you can credit.
I don't want to create some big drama or anything, just its such a big problem on the internet and I think its mostly because people have the mentality that its not a big deal to do it because everyone else does.

Sorry for spamming, but I just realised a way to explain the overlapping. Every single one of natures wings are firm(not sure what word to use). Bats, butterflies, dragonflies, birds, everything that flies, has firm that have no holes. Just because birds wings are made of feathers, doesn't mean that they would be magically different ^^ The feathers are a great way to keep wings warm, flexible and easy to clean. They aren't weird in any way, they just are a freaking smart innovation

Skudde In reply to AisuPiuPau [2013-06-08 15:55:25 +0000 UTC]
Good point. Though they DO have holes: the gaps between the feathers.
Think about this: the bird flaps its wing down so that it can get higher. But after that it has to pull its wing back up. Wouldn't that cause the lift to fade away and make the bird go down? The answer is no, because bird's flying feathers turn sideways when it pulls its wings back/up. So the gaps get larger and more air goes through the wing. While when the bird pushes its wings back down, the feathers turn back and create more lift.
...
Was that too complicated? One guy explained it on youtube once but I can't find the video. :S

Elikkäs linnut on parhaiten eri ilmastoihin sopeutuneita siivekkäitä :3 rispektiä evoluutiolle! (tai mihin nyt kukakin uskookaan
)

Jeah, ja sitten on vielä liito-oravat, liitoliskot ja liitokäärmeet, lentokaloista puhumattakaan. Lentävä kalmari on kans olemassa. Kaikki eliöryhmät vaan ilmaan hillumaan.

Thanks for making this I draw mostly bat-like wings, so I'm not very good with feathers ^^" But I totally understand your frustration with bad wings! But please say, that you do understand people who try their best with wings, but have not had the time and/or the time to practice all the details
I'm one of these people, but I try my best to get better at drawing these odd feathered flying things XD

Skudde In reply to AisuPiuPau [2013-06-08 15:48:44 +0000 UTC]
I admit that feathers are complicated and can be a pain to draw if you're not familiar with them. I've grown up with chicken's and have been a bird enthusiast for my whole life so feathers have just kind of grown on me. I totally understand that is not the case with most other people. :')
But feathered wings are a lot of fun when you learn to work with them. Until then they are like backgrounds to me: tears, blood and hard work.

I know, it's really easy to draw something you have seen all of your life ^^ With "basic" people, hands can be really hard to draw, because everyone sees them every day, so anyone can point out flaws in drawings. Same should be with wings
If humans had wings, we wouldn't draw them unrealistic :l (of course there would be liioittelua) (ja tässä kohtaa tajusin että perkele olet suomalainen, ja olen turhan kirjoittanu muka hienoa englantia :'D) Mutta joo, ei kukaan kädet omistava piirrä peukaloo keskelle kämmentä, ja sano "TÄ ON MUN TYYLI D:<" Niin ihmiset sais ajatella vähä miten piirtää sitte vähä oudompia osia hahmoilleen :3

The truth is that usually people just don't see the difference and there are few that see that.
But your totally right. even if I don't usually draw no way realistic wings, I try to atleast make feather overlapping right :'D

Finally someone who understands me. There are so many very good artist (too) who make this one important mistake. ( 」´0`)」
I sometimes just don't click ''add to favourites'' because of the mistakes on the wings.
This tutorial is well done and very helpful. I hope many people will see it.

Yeah, me too. It makes me dislike the whole picture if the wings are all wrong. :'D I understand if unexperienced artists make mistakes, because they are just learning, but it makes me see red when talented professionals don't bother to check wing anatomy just because they don't think it really matters to anyone.
And thanks! ^^ I hope so too.
