Description Okay! This is kind of rough. Colored sketch, really, but it was an idea I wanted to get out there. A How to Train Your Dragon roller coaster! Why not?

When you board, you can pick a night fury or a deadly nadder to ride. And then you're off, on a nice flight around a forest. Can't go upside-down, I don't think, but would be thrilling enough due to the open feel of the ride.

The ride design is based on the Pony Express ride at Knott's Berry Farm in California, and here is a photo: [link] and on this ride, there is a back pad that swings up and presses against the riders' backs so that they don't fall off the ride. On the dragon coaster, it would take the form of the dragons' tails (hinged somehow so they'd be down when loading but would move forward when the train was ready to depart).

I'll happily wait to get to ride the Deadly Nadder. <3

My God, that's beautiful! I really like the idea for the tails coming up as a security feature. It functions well without taking anything away from the aesthetics of the ride.

I swear, Dreamworks needs to get into gear and make a theme park! And in addition to this, they need a Soarin' Over California-type HTTYD ride! With the John Powell score for background music!

Thanks! And my God, there so needs to be a Soarin' over California version of How to Train Your Dragon. Immediately. And I need to ride it first. Front row center.

I can just imagine all the guests being like "Can we wait to ride a toothless?" constantly.

Well, half of them get to, at least. It would be annoying to have to run the train nearly half-empty most of the time, but it wouldn't look as pretty if the whole train was full of night furies.

Nice idea! I just hope there's extra safety gear on it since the riders are more exposed than other coasters (and I mean not just the back pads).

The Pony Express ride I looked at for inspiration has bars to hold the riders' legs (behind the knees) and the riders are kept fairly well sandwiched between the saddle pads and the back pads. I felt perfectly safe, but then the ride didn't do anything very extreme. It's a fun ride design...but needed to be dragons and not horses.

Oh my gosh THANK YOU for drawing this. I have been wishing they'd make wunna these for MONTHS.

Except in my version they'd include that killer dive-bomb on the Red/Green Death (you know where the camera kinda rides down Toothless' back?). Yeah that part. Complete with fireballs and explosions.

But I guess with intense stuff like that you wouldn't be able to ride the saddle, like in your drawing.

Skylanth In reply to Contraltissimo [2011-05-18 17:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh sure, that dive bomb down the back of the queen dragon could totally be part of this ride. We'd just wrap all the riders in flame-retardant bubble wrap. XD

There would totally be fire effects on this ride, though. There would HAVE to be.

That sounds like something six flags or another theme park should try. Nice idea.

I'm not sure which theme park, if any, has an affiliation with Dreamworks. But oh man, a DragonLand (BerkLand?) would be awesome. You could have this ride, a forest playground, some sort of Viking ship kiddie ride, and people could have whole chickens and turkey legs for lunch. XD

Whitestardragon In reply to Skylanth [2011-05-18 06:26:43 +0000 UTC]

Bush Gardens would probably be the first and best place for it, since they already have a midevil style section. I don't know if any have an affiliation but it wouldn't be to hard to pitch the idea.

A bit of research turned up that Dreamworks has or has had an affiliation with Paramount pictures, which did have theme parks at one time, but were acquired by Cedar Fair Entertainment. So...I guess a Cedar Fair park is where you might find this ride.

Whitestardragon In reply to Skylanth [2011-05-18 06:33:03 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard of that place, will have to look that up. And it is possible to go upside-down for a short time if the ride is designed for it.

Skylanth In reply to Whitestardragon [2011-05-18 06:59:02 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah, rides do go upside-down, but this ride isn't designed for it, as it has no shoulder restraints. I should have probably said this would be more of a family coaster, as the restraint system that might be used on it, similar to the Pony Express coaster I linked to, wouldn't work very well for more extreme ride elements.

Cedar Fair owns several parks in North America: Cedar Point, Valleyfair, Worlds of Fun, Knott's Berry Farm, Michigan's Adventure, Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, Kings Island, Kings Dominion, Carowinds, California's Great America, and Canada's Wonderland.

Thanks, Wikipedia!

The closest to me is Knott's berry farm, didn't know they were owned by that company. Yay wikipedia.
