I recognized Mr. Downey right away! The colors and contrasts are striking. If it takes you ten hours by digital means, believe me, it takes me three times as long by traditional methods. I think that you've got this procedure "aced", as my younger self would have said. You are doing just fine with these portraits; I envy anyone who can do what you are doing with digital paints.

I didn't listen to my drawing instructor, either, mainly because he had us drawing boxes all the time, and I really wanted to draw that hunky, cutie-pie across the easel from me. To this day, I still cannot draw a box. I wanted to draw Collinwood, but egads! That would have meant drawing a...box...shivers...and straight lines...frozen stiff. The tower would have been fine because of the curves, but no home is a tower.

Thanks! 10 hours is GOOD timing for me. I've been known to do around 50 hours for a piece... and I'm usually not impressed with the outcome. Traditional method SHOULD take longer, though. There aren't as many shortcuts.

Don't get me started on boxes... It isn't so much that I don't like drawing boxes, as it is that I just get super bored with scenery and background things in general. I completely understand the drive to draw hunky cutie-pies over objects.

This is great but you forgot his eyelashes

Lol, thanks... I'm doing portrait studies from photos at the moment, and not really adding features that aren't in the photos themselves (at least as far as the persons features go). I had a drawing instructor (who I never listened to... part of the reason I am going back NOW to do studies and whatnot in my old age) who said "draw what you see, not what you think should be there". In short... No eyelashes in the photo, no eyelashes in the drawing. Good observation, though.

You haven't seen it!? Or hadn't... that post was 10 hours ago... Lol. Omg... Avengers! (or as I like to think of it "Tony Stark and a bunch of other guys". Lol, j/k. Almost.) Can't wait.

(I also think of it like that, it's okay) I have now seen it! And it was wonderful! I'm seeing the Avenger tomorrow - purely for more Tony Stark (although I have kind of fallen in love with the whole 'series')

Iron Man 3: May 3, 2013.
Thor 2: Nov. 15, 2013.
Captain America 2: April 4, 2014

Take three moments. And a paper bag to breathe into.

If the world really ends this year and I don't get to see Iron Man 3 ( and the others... because, lets face it, it will always be Iron Man and those other guys. Except for the Hulk. He has moved up in the ranks. Now it's Iron Man, Hulk, and those other guys.), I am gonna be SO FREAKING PISSED.

I WILL BE FREAKING PISSED WITH YOU!!! (And it totally is Iron Man and the other, but I'm not sure about the Hulk. He had his moments in the Avengers, but I'm not totally sold on him. Iron Man top. Every time.)

Slacker-Drak In reply to MotherMercuryMedia [2012-04-12 04:19:36 +0000 UTC]

Nah, but that's probably just because the face was the FUN part, and the stripes were the "omg, I just wanna be done why do you have to be wearing pinstripes this is taking forever" part, lol. Thanks again!

MotherMercuryMedia In reply to Slacker-Drak [2012-04-19 11:29:31 +0000 UTC]

Hahah I know that! I always try to collab with other people who like doing backgrounds so I can just focus on characters when I make graphic novels and one shot works. Haha

Slacker-Drak In reply to MotherMercuryMedia [2012-04-21 02:09:27 +0000 UTC]

I am still in the practicing stage, but I feel like I will do the same sort of thing if I ever really get going. I am considering forcing myself to do some scenery shots in the near future, though. ( Bleh. Again.)

MotherMercuryMedia In reply to Slacker-Drak [2012-04-21 14:39:58 +0000 UTC]

What I have been doing lately is just doing backgrounds for fun and keeping this sort of background catalog to choose from when I do a character piece so they are not in a white void or sometimes I just paint in the background working on tones and blending for practice and giving some depth to the piece.

MotherMercuryMedia In reply to Slacker-Drak [2012-04-23 14:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah and if you are just doing various artwork pieces like this and not animation, make it big and just zoom in for it with various parts you need.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Slacker-Drak In reply to MotherMercuryMedia [2012-04-25 02:22:01 +0000 UTC]

Very good idea. I will definitely consider this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MotherMercuryMedia In reply to Slacker-Drak [2012-04-25 13:10:18 +0000 UTC]

Sure! Then you can just focus on your main body of the piece more and ignore worrying about the backgrounds so much.
