Description
Keep in mind this tutorial is more about how to draw and shade fur and less about shading itself which is why a lot isn't explained here for beginners. It was fairly difficult to explain exactly how to draw the the fur without a video, but when I get my new computer hopefully I'll be able to create one. Please let me know if you are confused about anything so I can help!

Thank you so much!! This was really helpful! But Iβm a bit confused on the backlights and colour effects, can you clarify a little?

Glad to help! I'm not sure what specific part of the backlight and color effects you need help on but I'll try to explain a little more
For the backlights you'll notice I added a thin blue line around the edge of the drawing where the shadows are, it makes things with overlapping shadows stand out, for example where I have shadows on the ear and neck its used on the edge of the ear to separate the two and make the ear look like its not glued to the neck. I use it very minimally so it's kinda hard to notice but using it you can also add slightly more strands of fur texture to stand out in the shadows also if that make sense??? (let me know if theres something specific about it you want to know, but hopefully that clarifies things a little more)
You might be able to see the blue line better in these drawings and how its used:
I do have a tutorial on backlight but its fairly old and kinda poorly made so I'll probably remake it in the future. It is also known as reflected light, so this example might help as well www.howtodrawjourney.com/imageβ¦
As for color effects you can pretty much use any airbrush or watercolor brush (I use sai but im sure there are similar things on other programs as well) and go around the edge of the drawing creating a gradient with another color just to kinda add a brighter effect to it. I didn't go much into detail here because it was mainly about fur but for the most part you'll want to use overlay layers towards the highlighted areas and multiply layers on the shadow areas (exception with the backlight again).
Here I used a red-orange color for overlay to kind of give it a warmer vibe and contrasted it with a purple multiply layer on the back and then added a cyan overlay over that previous multiply layer very slightly (this will vary depending on your color palette and background though!).
Its kinda hard to explain and again I do have a shading tutorial for more on how to do it but it is even older and needs to be remade especially since I use a lot of different techniques now, the best example I can give for this is the finished drawing and the layers in the tutorial and how its different in the before and after pictures.
I'll link the old tutorial here since I do go into more detail than my backlight tutorial though, color effects are on step 7
