Description
Asian-American. Not Asian. Not American. Asian-American. We exist in this hyphen, this liminal space where we cannot fit fully into either identity, where we float between being both but also neither. My parents are Vietnamese boat refugees, and I was born in Southern Califonia. I wanted this piece to represent that liminal space of growing up in both cultures. The figure stretches between lotus flowers and golden poppies, reaching to both but unable to touch either. We possess a sense of agency but simultaneously lack full control over our identities. That liminal space is what being Asian-American is. Not Asian. Not American. Both and none, synchronously. To
Please give me a critique for the composition and colour scheme of the painting. Does the composition correctly draw the viewer's eye to the person and two flowers? Do the colours flow well with each other? I would also love to know if my message (the description above) got across clearly. Thank you!

Thank you for this analysis! (: I purposefully centered the figure to show the push and pull between asian and american identities, as well as purposefully made the figure small to show how little agency the person feels. I'd love to think of other ways to display these feelings though that would allow for off centering!

Doing well, thank you for asking! A busy week because of college finals, but hopefully after graduation I can have more time for art. How about you?

Hello fellow improvement club member! *waves*
Quickly answering first question: Yes, my attention snaps to the person and two flowers in sharp focus. (Literally, snap to them. Darting. No smooth flow from one another.)

Hello, and thank you for your feedback! Do you think there should be a smooth flow?

You're welcome. ^^
Visually, a smooth flow would be more pleasing, because my attention would shift between the flowers and person through an obvious connection like a tug-of-war rope game. But with the message you're trying to convey, the current static-ness of the eyeflow also makes sense, because it feels like the person is in a stuck in a limbo, unable to move towards either flower and floating pass them in a futile attempt to reach them.
So the visual flow would depend on if you want your message to lean more with "I'm connected to both cultures" or "I am neither culture." (Which is confusing cause both are true. >_<; )
