Play with layer types and blurs:

Add, screen and lighten makes everything beneath the coloured portions of your current layer brighter and probably a different colour based on what colour you used for that layer.

Multiply and darken make the layers darker

I dunno how difference and burn work, but you can play with those. They do some cool stuff to your piece.

Overlay mixes the light values (i.e. a red stroke overlaying a green layer would make the portion below the stroke yellow. A good way to learn how to control overlay is studying the colour wheel of light)
