I think you are correct - it obviously shows evidence of previous building.

Even as an ruin today this castle is showing how magnificent was in own time. First was wooden construction than STONE ( as we tolk before-the stone is forever). I like this photo because you took picture from inside where was rooms full with life, secrets, wishes...plans..., where was stairs, where was chairs, beds...

You obviously know the history of Helmsley Castle better than I!! You are correct: it was first built in wood and around 70 years later it was converted to stone. I must admit I would love to be able to take myself back in time by 800+ years to see what it was like. I will be visiting Helmsley again next month. I shall look at the castle with new interest!!

I understand your desire absolutely. Whenever I see an old building, the ruins of the old town..., on traveling or anywhere, from any time or century I wish that I have magic wand to regain old glory and brilliance of that building or place and make that all again as was in own time. when it was built.

It is the best English Heritage can manage ... on the cheap!!
The Castle was partly destroyed, deliberately, by Parliament during the English Civil War back in the 17th century. Such a sad fate for a beautiful building!
Thanks for commenting.

Sadly, yes!
Well at least on his orders. I suppose he didn't do the damaging deed himself!

Yes, would quite like to be transported back in time to see what it was like, only briefly though: don't think I would fancy living without mod cons or modern medicine. Imagine catching the plague and knowing you were probably a 'gonna'!!
I guess the air con was probably also a little too efficient! lol

Yee gads! The plague, forgot about that little piece of nastiness....agreed, maybe only to look around, snap a few pics, meet a couple of interesting folks and blaze outta there
