Did you get to go inside?Β  Someday I would love to see a castle.Β  Our history does not go back that far for castles.Β  We have other thingsΒ but not that. The American Indian for one.Β  I imagine living in one of those rock structures and how cold and chilly it could be. It probably could be cool in the summer though.Β  TheΒ giant fire places I have seen in pictures and the amount of wood that would be needed to keep warm in the winter.Β  Nice seeing your beautifulΒ work these last months and wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year!

Didn't get to go inside this particular castle but I have been inside other castles in the UK. They are even more chilly these days .... many of them are now ruins and have no roof!! I remember visiting one castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and apparently it was so cold, damp and draughty that it really played havoc with her arthritis. She complained that the wind whistled into every corner of her chamber!!Β

Thanks very much for the lovely comment and, my good wishes for 2014.

Indeed you must! We do have some beautiful historic buildings - not just castles. Our weather may be decidedly "iffy" but our history is a definite plus!! Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for faving!

Maybe US TV gave more coverage to English scenery but our coverage sadly didn't. With exception of Cycling (road races)and the sailing and a few other odd venues, we didn't get much "scenery" just London and I am not a big fan of London!! Just don't tell a Londoner how I feel!

Yes, usually at the opening of each segment they would "fly" around the area and get shots of buildings, countryside, etc. NBC is pretty good about that, same for the winter olympics in Vancouver and also in Beijing. And to see these sights in high def is amazing!! Your photos just make me want to visit all that much more Someday I will, in person this time

Yee gads!! Better have a wheel chair standing by at Heathrow for me, then

Yep, we use dollars and cents....but they are taking about discontinuing the penny, then everything would be in 5 cent increments....

I'm sure you exaggerate although, I'll probably be 6ft under or sporting a full set of joint replacements!!

Well....we better make things happen sooner then Not quite ready to be pushing up daisys just yet

Better snatch up pennies fast before they're all gone.... that's what people are saying anyway....we'll see, that's been a rumor for a long time now.

Why are they called pennies? (sounds a bit British!!!)why not just 1 cent?!! Bet visitors get confused with pennies, nickels, dimes and things. Of course pre decimal we had numerous coins, eg farthings, pennies, florins, half crowns, pounds, guineas ......!!! Ah those were the days! Decimalisation simplified it somewhat but until a few years ago we had an annoying tiny coin: the halfpenny which was so small it kept getting lost in pockets and bags etc. Hope you hang on to your penny - very useful to put in piggy banks

Because of our British heritage of course....actually I don't have a clue where they got that Our dimes are bad enough, smaller than pennies! Yeesh!!

Perhaps they should get rid of the dime instead!!

very historic, I've heard of Ludlow Castle thanks to my board gaming background.

That's pretty impressive: I hadn't realised that Ludlow Castle was so famous!! I think though that some of our Medieval Royals lived here for a while.

I know it from an older board game called Kingmaker, which is from War of the Roses, there was a noble family that used Ludlow as their starting castle in the game.

Have to confess I hadn't heard of the game. Have just checked it out on Wiki. From the description, it looks a little complicated!! Interestingly the remains of King Richard III, who would probably have been a major character of "Kingmaker", were recently found under a car park in the city a few miles from where I live!

Me too and I prefer the ruined ones. Not sure why. Maybe they just give the imagination greater range!

Autodidacta In reply to smallsofthamish [2013-03-08 14:08:19 +0000 UTC]

Maybe but some are sad to see because they're too deteriorated to be rebuilt, even a bit.

smallsofthamish In reply to Autodidacta [2013-03-08 16:33:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes rather sad when it gets to just a few stones left. Amazing though how archaeologists seem to be able to extract history from such decay.

Yep.
In Spain there are many ruined castles in private properties so supposedly the government can't (or doesn't want to) do anything to 'rescue' them and prevent them from crumbling to the ground. One example:

Pic not mine btw. I wish it was.

Thankfully, here buildings with historical interest are often taken over by the English Heritage organisation and so preserved.
