I like to cycle along the Kennet & Avon Canal here, near Reading.

That lock looks very narrow compared to most I've seen. Maybe even the first time I've seen a single gate lock.

Strangely, I've rarely seen anything other than a single lock! We did some rather scary doubles on the Worcester and then on the Severn but mostly, up here in the Midlands, I've only encountered the singles.

Maybe the local history of the areas. Bigger locks must have cost more, and maybe the more affluent southern/home counties were better funded.

Thank you. Yes it is a lock in the foreground. We had just been through it and, as I was obviously off the boat, had probably been delegated to do the strenuous stuff: winding the paddles and opening the gates!!
