Description The swans along the water glide,
Unfettered and yet side by side
So should true lovers ever be,
Together ever - ever free.

Swans are probably a photographers dream ... just wish I could master the art of catching them in flight

Is this the honeymoon of the couple?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2014-01-13 12:29:41 +0000 UTC]

It's possible. We shall never know. Although there were hundreds, maybe thousands of swans on the water there did seem to be some pairings and these two spent much of the time together. Equally some were swimming around in threes .... a love triangle perhaps? Or decisions still to be made!!!Β

They probably have other claims for honeymoon.

It seems that swans take a mate for life so some of the pairings may be already established, which would explain why some already seem to be in pairs (they are older swans) but others are younger and still have not selected their life partner. Not sure if this process takes place here in the UK or when they fly back to Iceland, Russia and Scandinavia for the summer.

Many of our swans are still the complete year on the lakes, andersvolker.deviantart.com/ar…

Yes, our native Mute Swans stay in the UK all year but Bewick's and Whoopers (those with the yellow beaks) only stay here for the winter.Β

Thanks for the details of swan families, so is your couple a native swan?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2014-01-14 23:13:10 +0000 UTC]

No, they are Whooper Swans and so would fly north around March time and return here in October for the winter. There are a few Whoopers who remain here because they have damaged wings and would never survive the long flight.

Can you recognize when they return next October who is the couple?

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2014-01-15 22:42:11 +0000 UTC]

I would not be able to recognise them but the staff at the Wetlands Centre may be able to. They ring many of the swans and track them. There have been occasions when one of the pair returns to the Centre but the other does not - sometimes for two or three years. The staff fear the worst and then suddenly the missing one turns up!!
