I'm glad you think so. One imagines that it would be quiet but it's amazing the sounds that do come from a wood, even when there's no wind: the crackling of fallen leaves, the dripping of moisture and a gentle whispering sound. All this combined with the mist produced one of those moments when you stand and look on in awe.

It's all too easy not to take the time to do that.

These trees are not that far from Scotland so may well Β speak your language!!
I'm guessing you have quite an affinity with trees?

I am one with the trees of the Smokies at times, yes. It is less of what I do and more of what they do, since I am but an humble visitor, an invader of their serene and peaceful lair. I can tell you, however, that this beautiful serenity is but the top layer of things in the wild...

I am not so much "at one" with trees as "in awe". I like trees as individuals but looking up at a forest of trees towering over me, is something special.

Ah. Yes, to be one with the ents is to first be in awe of them. Then comes the part where you get still, looking around for a nurse log seat. Perhaps instead you find a nice flat rock to lay down on your back for a look up at the canopy. Pecking it with your stick to vacate any biting things, you take your resting place for a spell. There, among the giants of old, the Earth moves. It is a tangible feeling of spinning slowly through the ether. The elts tell us of our place within. Quite a magical thing. It's whyΒ we hike.

Thank you. I find trees so fascinating; I was reading an article a few weeks ago that reported on a study which found that trees actually communicate with each other.Β

Now, when I walk alone, deep inside these woods
Leaves whisper to my ear and shower coloursΒ
And that reminds, I still have the keys thatΒ You'veΒ
lost - long before; I kept it here, with great care.
If you want it back ever, come here andΒ
ask them and keep some colours for my soul.

It looks like a magical place and indeed there was a sort of whispering amongst the leaves but the reality was that it was decidedly wet both underfoot and from above!!Β

Yes, I've been many times in these types of forests on the foothills of the Himalayas, where it rains a lot. Even at dry days, these forests are very moist and if you ever see any picture of the himalayan forests, you'll find lots of mossy growth on the trunks of most of the trees.
but the sound of wind through the trees, which sometimes intensified by crickets, is magical and gives you a kind of spell.
I used to tell my driver to stop the car, get down and entering inside around 50mt used to sit on a stone (though moist) and used to forget everything. There may be elephants, leopards, snakes, leeches (they are plenty, in these areas- I can recall one day I had to remove seven and I don't know how they get inside my socks even); but it would make me forget all.
You reminds me those long gone days.
Thanks from the deep inside my heart.Β
