Originally portrayed more famously by Lon Chaney, Claude Rains (who famously played Jack Griffin, The Invisible Man, 10 years earlier) starred in the big budget technicolor (only Universal Monster in color !) remake of the 1925 Phantom of the Opera (based off of the novel by Gaston Leroux) in 1943. It's not as good as the '25 version. The '43 version comes off as an opera musical drama than more of a horror film.
