Description Stayed up until 4 AM messing with this. Β  Β  These results aren't meant to be completely photorealistic, but I'm pretty sure movies kinda lie to us when they show a nicely lit medieval or fantasy tavern interior at night. Unless they spent half the town's gold on candles, it's going to be dark as heck in there. A lot of smoke will add to the general brightness, but that wouldn't make for a very enjoyable mead night either.

These settings seem to give a nice warm, dark, but not *too* pitch black look that should be suitable for fantasy renders while avoiding using an HDRI or any other light sources that would not be present in real life. If you want to make any improvements, I just ask that you please post your results and settings so we can all benefit from them. There's already too many 'secrets' when it comes to Iray rendering...come on, 9 months in and we still don't have a set of generally agreed-upon skin settings?

Couple of extra things:

* If you lower the Bloom radius, you can get a nice oval candle glow. I use 0.30 here (which is large) to get that hazy glow over the table and around the kettle.

* The Candle Wax settings are just applied to the default textures of the candles used here. It's mainly just to allow some of the light from the candle to penetrate into the wax. You may have to adjust it for different candles, but the principle should be the same.

Hope it can be useful or at least a starting point towards better interior fantasy lighting! Thanks for taking a look!

These are extremely old though and the bloom settings are probably not very good. I hope they can help, but be sure to adjust them to your scene.

Nothing in Hollywood uses natural light, especially not interiors Anything this dark would be hard to follow in a movie.

Great job, especially balancing the bloom.

Thanks, glad it looks OK so far. I'll have to actually use it in a real render before I know how well it works overall, but it's something. Β

Have you tried using an emission map for the fire(s)? I've had some decent success with mapped fire, like willbear.deviantart.com/art/St… .

I didn't notice you could place an image in the emission channel, thanks very much for that suggestion! Very good example pic too, it keeps all of the fire detail and still casts some light.

It's pretty nice, SnowS! Thanks!
I never used bloom in Iray. I always prefer do this in photoshop, but IΒ΄ll try next time.

You're certainly better than I am when it comes to interiors and environments in general, so any suggestions you might have would be welcomed! Β  Β  Bloom in Iray is kind of interesting, it definitely makes emissions look better in my opinion.

Thank you, SnowS.
I don't know if I'm good..I have lucky sometimes. lol
Normally I use HDRI (a dark one) and to light the place I use emissive planes or sphere and spot light.
I often fake, like the new image that I will post soon, where the characters are inside a tent. In this case I did not make the entire tent, just the front. lol I duplicated and placed on the sides and i didnΒ΄t put a ceiling. I used a dark HDRI and I lit the "inside" of the tent with a emissive plane with a warm color to give the impression of candles. And 1 spot light for the moon light.
If it's a closed place, I do the same thing but I use a lighter hdri (if it's daylight) so that the light pass through the window. (andΒ  sometimes 1 spot light for the outside light if necessary)

I'm always changing the way I do things, because sometimes it works, sometimes not. That's why i canΒ΄t say "do this way" because sometimes they donΒ΄t work.

sorry my english ^^

I think we have to use different methods for different scenes, and that's something that I sometimes forget. It's better to know multiple ways of doing something and then trying them until we find the right one. Β I was using an HDRI for a while on my last image (Still 25 Cents), but it was making everything look very pale and the lighting was quite uniform. I then decided to try using point lights and a sun, and it worked out better. Β

Your English is always fine too, never worry! Β

Heh, funny, have been using elements of the same set in my fantasy scenes lately, Snow.

The medieval tavern by Faveral? It's one of the best sets of its kind, comes with so many props and still holds up despite being fairly old. Β

Pretty easy to convert to iray too, so I must agree. His medieval series are a real gem for the medieval fantasy renders, even to date.

Yep, I probably use some of his items in every render I make. I just wish Stonemason was as into fantasy as he is into sci-fi. Β
